Let’s be realistic about next season

Biglicks

Central Defender
If we are to improve on what’s been a fantastic season, do we need to be even more ruthless than we were last season with the squad?
Who stays and who goes?
Obviously saying we hang onto all our best players, Roefs, Sadiki, Diarra, Ballard, Mukiele, Brobbey etc.

Going back to may, none of what has happened would have sounded realistic back then would it. So what is actually realistic now?

Pretty simple really. Realistically we aim for 40 points first, once that's achieved then we aim higher.
Much the same as this season come to think of it.

Don't be surprised if we sell at least half of these. Europe might change that like.

You simply can't move players on, it just doesn't work like that. You can put players up for sale but you need a buyer. You can drop the price but it still doesn't mean they'll go. Only players out of contract can be ushered out of the club and I only think Cirkin and Gerty fall into that category.

I would like us to keep Cirkin. I don’t think Gerty will want to stay due to lack of game time, but I would like to see us keep him too.

I think we need to move for a new left back though. Reinaldo is topper, but he’s getting on a bit so I would imagine his performances will start to drop off if we rely on him to play every match, especially so if we qualify for Europe.

If we are being absolutely ruthless, then I think we need new wingers too. Am I right in thinking Traore is only on a short term deal? Then beyond that, only Talbi has had any real consistency. But that’s only if I’m being as ruthless as the club were last year. I think there’s a player worth developing in Angulo. I liked the very small ammount I saw of ta bi, and I think riggy could learn to play the position well also if given the chance (though he’s deff better at cm atm)

once he starts wearing long sleeves, it's a sign.
Like Xhaka, he's looked after himself, is a real professional and this league seems to suit him well.
Reckon there's another 2 years in him there to help us bed in a younger replacement gradually

I think Cirkin has again missed too much football to be a reliable back up. He did well when he stepped into Reinaldo's shoes for a couple of games then got injured and it's never for a game or two, always a couple of months. Time to let him go for me. Ruthless.

to be honest i'm sure the 3 months out with a broken thumb was a cover story for something a lot deeper than we've been lead to believe.
So i'm willing to give him a pass for that.
I also think with that in mind, he and the club will be waiting until the end of the season before looking at a new deal.

Yeah but he again broke down when Reinaldo was injured this year and we ended up playing Hume left back. Sorry but we can't keep a player who is only fit for about a dozen games a season.

If we can repeat this season and finish somewhere around mid table give or take a few places either way I’d be over the moon.

We aren’t gonna keep everyone and sign players tha ca take us to the next Level after one season.

Second season always seems as hard for promoted sides that manage to overachieve to sustain so I’d take anywhere mid table again and hand the mags their arses again please

We don't know whether we'll be in Europe. We can rely on Regis to be honest though: the final six games are our preparation for next season, whatever comes next, and the players ("behind my back") have their sights set high.
I won't be gutted if we don't get to Europe but I'm sure as fuck our game vs Villa won't end with us making no subs and getting no yellow cards like Brentford's squib vs Fulham yesterday.
