Leicester - was it worth it?

100%. That 15/16 season was arguably the best we’ve ever seen in the premier league era given the circumstances.

If their owner didn’t pass away in 2018, I reckon they wouldn’t be in the mess they see themselves in today.

A Leicester fan who is my age will have great stories for their kids/grandkids in future. Winning the league, FA Cup and some great European memories.

I judge anyone who wouldn't swap making up the numbers in the prem to experience that but end back up in the third tier.

100%. I always assumed when I was younger I would see us win something eventually. Now I'm, er, middle-aged, I'm not so sure and would love to see us win anything. If it were the league, I'd go on a month-long bender!

As a side note - I’ve always found it weird (and annoying) that Leicester have added to their honours so much in my time following football.

Sunderland are a “bigger” club than them by most matrices but go on Wikipedia and you’ll see their list of:

Premier League
FA Cup
League Cup x2
Charity Shield

all since 1997. Since then both them and us have been in the Premier League 17 times out of 30 seasons and we’ve got 1 league cup final appearance to show for it :-(

obviously as fan it was completely worth it. baring it mind its highly likely that in the next 5 years they'll not be in league one any more and could realistically return to the premier league just like us, coventry, leeds, sheff utd, ipswich etc... its a cycle - well a rollercoaster - and they've been to the very top and are now at the bottom for a bit

my only gripe with this if it happened to sunderland would be the effect it would have on the city in the medium term. the club, the stadium, matchdays, premier league etc.. are all playing a massive part in the resurgence of the city at the moment. imagine if we had built the new footbridge and had its grand opening in a league one game against burton albion
I lived in Leicester for over a decade prior to the famous wins. They will live on the glory for years as we did after 1973 . However, as shown in the last few home games the crowds have evaporated. This will get worse next season as thousands of the glory hunters will disappear. They have a massive wage bill and a squad full of failures who’ll not want to move on. The parachute payments will also disappear just to keep the club running.

Seeing your side win the Premier League and then follow up with a few seasons in Europe including a quarter final in the Champions league.

I honestly would take 20 years in the lower leagues if I could witness us achieve what they’ve done.

Some will argue long term stability trumps short term success but those memories will last a lifetime to Leicester fans, isn’t that what sport is all about?
Just because Leicester have gone from winning the Premier League down to League 1 bears no relationship to how we will fare, nobody knows how well we can do or badly. Up to now we are exceeding expectations, enjoy the ride. Europa is still a possibility.

Attendances would fall drastically like.
‘Sunderland til I die’*

*unless we’re losing a game at home on a Friday neet

I think most fans would say aye give me what Leicester had but what about the fans that started going after? What would SAFC fans who first started supporting the lads in 1974 say about the 1973 lot who sold the club 50 years of winning nowt else? 🤪

Footy memories aren't always about winning silverware because if they were then why do fans of clubs go to games when they've no chance of winning the Premier League, FA Cup or League Cup? Memories can be made at footy even at games we lose as it's not just about success, it's about making memories with family and friends and many can last a lifetime. Most recently, we won no silverware for that Ballard moment and could have lost the playoff final pre VAR, yet that moment is something most fans will remember for a lifetime.

I don't think there demise has to do with winning the title, more to do with the helicopter crash that killed the current owners dad, and very poor business in the transfer market after the title

But yes it would be worth it
Their demise was trying to stay up there by increasing their wages constantly, going from £80m to over £200m. All while selling some of the best players, spending big on players such as Slimani/Musa the season after and ultimately failing to get into the big money Champions League again.

They had a one off freak season of most players firing on all cylinders, along with the 'big 6' having poor seasons and stupidly chased the dream of staying up there. The same is happening at the mags and Villa as footy is fucked and any team trying to get up there will ultimately fail and potentially pay the consequences in later years. I waffled about it HERE just recently as they got close but failed, even with just 15 mins to go in a season that may have been a sliding doors moment.

Definitely worth it, especially for the ones that lived through it. The only ones that probably think it wasn't are the under 18s as they probably can't remember too much about it

Plus PAPPA JOHNS marra! 🍕

I’ve got a good friend who’s a Leicester fan and I asked how he felt about their relegation and he just shrugged it off and said he’d still die happy, after their league and FA Cup wins.
Yep. Its like getting dumped off Sydney Sweeny after a roller coaster weekend away in Paris where you were convinced she was gonna fall in love with you.
Its tough saying goodbye at the airport but my DNA will be on those hotel curtains forever x

That would have been tremendous if it had come anywhere near close to happening at any point in the 60 years prior to me becoming not arsed.
