Right when I go to the gym I mostly do treadmill, I want to learn how to run so Ive been walking really fast then jogging for as long as I can bare it, about 3 to 4 mins at the moment then walking again then running again but my running times get shorter - am I doing this right?

The couch to 5k is a good place to start, its got our kid off her fat arse and is now pounding the streets.
