Leach

This is a huge blow. Who’s the alternative? I’m sorry but Root ain’t the answer. It’d be a massive gamble to pick Ahmed. If he gets destroyed it could ruin him.

Root isn’t the answer I agree but has decent record against lefties and there is 4 out of 7

Mail saying jacks, Ahmed and Dawson in frame

Might just be guessing
Patterson-White.

He won’t even be in the conversation like in reality

If they play another seamer it will be Broad, I think Potts would be ahead of selection over Woakes. Root is a better spinner than Jacks or Livingstone I don’t see the point in playing either of them but it’s up to Stokes. Just need someone who can hold an end
Woakes at home at Edgbaston ?

is Anderson fit, it’s gone awfully quiet on him?

woakes, broad, Robinson and wood, with root and stokes to back up

re livingstone, bar injury he would have played the tests in Pakistan, so that appears to me to indicate McCullum and Stokes fancy him as a player

Jacks did play and only injury stopped him as well

all to be seen though

Dawson is a good shout he’d by me pick from those

I like Woakes I’d play him at lords but for the others I think he’s behind all the other seamers in terms of selection not sure who’s fit though

That’s a good question on fitness

anderson , gone quiet

Robinson had a niggle , not read it’s going to be a problem but you never know

Wood , not bowled red ball in the championship this season

Stokes , I just can’t see him bowling at full pelt for 15 overs in a day

that leaves in form and fitness Potts, Broad and Tongue

as for the spin

Root could bowl ten and hopefully the Aussies won’t take him for 6 an over , with the odd bought wicket

then outside of that for spin is difficult and there’s no real form to be gained in red ball, as it’s in hibernation during the peak summer months

there’s also to be taken into account , we very rarely bowl 90 overs in a day so that may allow for more seam over spin anyway
England only manage about 80 overs a day as it is, with a full time and part time spin option to call upon. Replace the full time spin with another seamer and they'd be lucky to bowl 70 overs a day.

I hope Stokes doesn't bowl. What have they done to fix his knee, it seems like no more than reseting him and that won't do it (I think). I don't want him complely crocked.

Forget about Ali. The gone and out of it.
They should go for a spinner.
Root shouldn't be it although he is pretty good. But if they do go for a spinner then they have the option of having spin from each end.
I wouldn't mind Bess at all. His record isn't bad and he has been good in the past, it seems a bit previous to judge and dismiss a spinner when he's young. He's only 26 even now.
