Only a development contract and he's being released. Let him go and see if he can earn a contract elsewhere, standard stuff and once the decision is made it's good for the player.

Let's bear in mind here, he's managed 1 T20 game in his career and he's going to be too old for a development contract next season. We're not talking about Shane Warne here.

Buckley is the 2nd spinner in the squad, it was a reasonable selection. Didn't work out, obviously, but it certainly wasn't 'bizarre'. I don't see anyone calling it 'bizarre' at the start of the game, more SMB 20/20 hindsight.

I never said it was bizarre

Morley is only 21 so certainly not too old for a development contract. To the best of my knowledge he's completed 1 year of a 2 year development contract.Would be bizarre if he's been released imo unless he's asked to be so.

22 by the time next season starts and has managed exactly 90 minutes of cricket for the first team, and none this year. The 2nds have finished their season and he's absolutely nowhere near playing for the 1sts, why is it bizarre?

It does appear a bit tough on the lad, never seen him bowl but figures wise he certainly has not been out bowled by Buckley. Of the 5 development contracted players that 2 released and Coughlin must be nailed on to get a full contract next season. Iam sure Durham will want to fill those positions for next season as it is a way of bolstering squad numbers on the cheap. I look at the academy scorecards and there does not appear to be anyone standing out although most of them are 16/17 yr olds.

Because at 21year old is very young for a spinner,he's got more than twice the number of wkts at half the average and a better economy rate than Buckley and is the leading wicket taker amongst slow bowlers in the 2nd XI championship. Figures aren't everything,of course, but there's evidence there of promise. Just seems premature to cancel his development contract halfway through. If indeed that's the case.

Someone else did and you seemed to agree with your 'financial decision' comment, you also said it was bizarre that he's been released. Neither is true IMO.

Getting rid of your leading wicket taker in 2nd XI cricket is a tad bizarre bearing in mind Breese is leaving and Borthwick is out of contract at the end of the season. Would like to think the club kept hold of him for a bit longer and see what he can do

Looks like another short-sighted decision courtesy of the management. Borthwick leaves and we just plod on with our heads in the sand with no adequate replacements.

Or lets look at it another way: The 4th choice spin bowler who has never made a County appearance has been let go.

How long should we hold onto these players? How many years should we keep players who don't make any kind of impact on the team?
