Kirk played a young Scottish soldier in "Tunes of Glory" in what was a very brief and uncredited cameo role that is easily missed. (You can spot him for a second just behind Alec Guinness in the Regimental dance scene). Interestingly lots of people often rate his 1957 film "Paths of Glory" that he made for Stanley Kubrick more highly -but I don't necessarily agree.

Just been on BBC2 with Bobby Mitchum in Build my Gallows High, black and white film noir from 1947 and he looked middle aged then! He'd be able to tell a story or two I'm sure.
