We've been told 2 - 2 1/2 years for my eldest to be assessed now, but also - CAMHS have refused to support her (some low-level self harm we wanted to address before it became a bigger thing) because they "suspect her difficulties may be indicative of ASD." I just hit the point where it was laugh or cry and chose the laughter option at how stupid the world is. She's challenging - unlike the younger (diagnosed) child whose rigidity kicks in in terms of following rules and doing everything "right" and she could have gone right off the rails with different parents who didn't quite get how to handle her - she's gone through periods of lashing out at me in particular, but seems to have got a handle on that as she gets older. At the moment she's in a relatively OK place - so we went for the waiting list while things were settled, rather than having to try to start tackling everything if she hit into crisis.
Ironically my boss heads up the SALT service in CAMHS in the neighbouring county - she was furious when she heard about the issues we'd been having! Very frustrating when I work with a bunch of people qualified to do ADOS assessments, and I'm due to be trained to do them myself next time work run the course - but still having to serve our years and years on the waiting list!
