Why do so many kid’s movies have one of the lead character’s parents die off?

it’s such a common theme. Watched a couple of Christmas movies with the family last night and the bairn pointed it out.
 


Disney have been running these sort of plots for years - it's to take account of the growth of one parent families

Funnily enough I mentioned this to someone at work and they reckoned it was something to to with one of Walt Disney’s parents and him feeling guilty about their death?
 
It's the coming of age theme that was popularised by Sydney. The wise elder dies off leaving the young pretender to make the ascension. They do it in Starwars.

You been watching frozen by any chance?
 
Source material, easy way to gain sympathy for a character, lazy as there's one less character in the household, cheap because there's one less actor to hire.
