Keel Crossing [opened 18.10.25] - compendium thread

I do hope it gets some national recognition or award
Perfect for a feature on bbc breakfast along where they often run a few local stories over the weekend

Walked over on Wednesday lunchtime for the first time. It’s fantastic.

Was really surprised how busy it was mid week. Popped into Sheepfolds for a coffee but there was a big queue and I didn’t fancy waiting 20 mins. Propa was stowed off too.

It’s improved the walk to the stadium from town massively, not just because it’s quicker. It’s just better. Everything around the stadium feels premier league again. The painting of the roof is complete up to the south stand now, the new club shop, Quinn’s bar, founders bar, 76 yards.

The family memorial is my favourite part of the stadium though. It’s what the club is all about, the people, and the heaven branch have done a great job looking after it. The hand painted rocks brought a tear to my eye.

There’s a sense of pride around the place again and the bridge has been a massive part of the regeneration. There’s still plenty left to come too judging by the number of builders and plant still on site.

WDSC & WDSAFC

I was going to alter my morning walk route today so I'm not crossing it every day, but with the rain I saw some photo opportunities so I went over it again.
Totally changed the landscape of the city.

Looks a bit slippy. Did you take those photos while spread-eagled on the floor after slipping over for your claim as there's no "Caution: Slippery When Wet" signs? Will be like this when it starts freezing 😉

Keel Square is treacherous when it is freezing but the forward thinkers in the bridge building world have covered Keel Crossing with tarmac to supply better grip. Well done the Bridge Bods and WDSC.

Finally walked across the bridge today, was a nice experience, I found that despite their being very obvious railings when walking close to the edge it felt like nothing was their, like an infinity pool, very odd.

If I still attended matches I can see the great advantage it would have given me in walking across.

Do you think people are going to start including the sheepfolds as part of their town route cos there’s a bridge there now?
The only realistic scenario I can envisage would be to start there, maybe to get some food, then cross the bridge to start the town route. We’d just get a taxi to do that if there was no bridge so it might save a coupon for quid, but that’s probably offset by the extortionate drink prices in the stables. It’s not like you’re going for a few cheap ones to start the night off is it?
There's more to day to day life than a route around pubs 😂

Been said numerous times the Sheepfolds area is undergoing massive regeneration with housing coming next. The bridge provides a direct link with the regeneration on the south side, the transport links, the businesses taking up the new office space, and the leisure facilities in town now.

Plenty of rivers have multiple crossings in a short space. They all serve a purpose.

My only gripe was that i thought it was a bit of waste of money but as we didn’t pay for it then its ok.

Walking over the bridge to the stadium last night was brilliant. The ground needs a sunderland badge/lights on the side you see from the bridge though would look even more spectacular.

Walking back over the bridge after the match was as equally appealing to the eyes. The development is nothing other than outstanding. Everyone involved needs deserve huge plaudits and a pay rise. When you get back towards the new buildings it feels like walking through London though not as tall.

Tried to get a picture but dont think it really does it justice.
