Keel Crossing [opened 18.10.25] - compendium thread

Honestly, if you'd asked me a decade ago if I'd like to move to Sunderland, I wouldn't have given it much thought. But these days I'd seriously consider it, if it weren't for the cost.
When the industry was all closed down we had Tory MPs telling us that there was going to massive investment and they would make it a place where people wanted come to work and live. They were all false promises. It's taken nearly 40 years to get to this point.

He still had the hump because Sir Bob was able to get financial grants to build the SOL, as it was brown field site. While the Mags got nowt when they redeveloped Sid James.
Public money was spent on cleaning up the industrial waste from it being on a colliery site, normal practice for old industrial areas, otherwise would never get redeveloped. What is happening now in Redcar with the old steel works. Ben Houchen usually on Look Newcastle with his hard hat on. However, Hall said the club should pay as they were using the land to build what was to become the Sol. Think he was also on some committee to allocate money for Millennium projects, the Gateshead Eye bridge got money but nothing for Wearside but will stand corrected. The bloke was an arse, the whole family thought they were Geordie royalty.

He didn't block a bridge as such, he stopped any money being allocated, is how I remember it.

I think we got the Winter Gardens.

If we could just go back to having the search lights back on above the stadium like they used to be in the early years.
What a spectacle it would be with the new bridge lit up.
Someone get onto Brucey and Kyril.
Even some nice signage on the roker end would look gpod. A 'sunderland a.f.c' or 'roker end' ,right in your line of vision as you are on the bridge would be good

Did he? How ?
He was in charge of the funding for all the millenium bridges. He blocked the funding for the crossing of the Wear in Sunderland.
Did he????? Didn't know that.
Yea bloke was in charge of the funding for the millenium bridges. Said ours wasnt worthy.

He blocked the funding as he stated it wasnt worthy.
He also knew it would help the club and allow them to increase capacity easily as it would allow easier access to the SOL.

Hall was a Sunderland fan I'm sure, but took it out on the whole area that he wasn't allowed to buy the team

I dont think he was that bothered by football, he only cared about making money. Couldn't buy Sunderland so took over Newcastle, got lucky with Keegan / shrewd move ? Went on to sell to Ashley. A lot of Mags despise him for that. Gave the Conservative party a load of money but think he has jumped ship to reform.

A bit like that Newcastle MP, plays to the crowd. Leaves Park, grade 2 listed Victorian Park, just build over it. Her and Hall both awful people. Don't know many Sunderland fans who would buy Newcastle, unless it was to run them into the ground. He's as much a Sunderland fan as Salmon pants and the other one, everything just a business.
