Keel Crossing [opened 18.10.25] - compendium thread

Love it when people have such opinions on things they know nowt about like.

Yep..the main contractor, the client , the sub contractors , the designers , the supply chain.....all of them have just decided for no reason whatsoever to slow down the rate of progress.

The fact that there'll be eye watering overheads involved, legally binding contracts, programmes , agreed handover dates of each sub-package, potential liquidated damages, other projects that people are ear-marked to start working on means absolutely nothing.... The bridge building experts have spoken and it "should have been finished ages ago"

Also, something to do with back-handers and useless council workers

Not quite. I do know from my time as a construction lawyer that there are projects with significant padding included.

I’m not saying that the bridge is, but as I said in my earlier post, it seems like progress is glacial.

I'm working on two decent sized construction projects at the moment that are over 100 weeks each, and there is hardly any wiggle room in the programme.

You don't get to the last 2 months of a 2 year job and then just unanimously decide across the whole team to "slow down" and delay the hand over.

Each sub contractor will be contractually bound to complete their packages in the agreed times.

Yes, there may be delays with the supply of materials or other unforeseen circumstances but the main contractor will be pushing as hard as possible to get it signed off

Wiggle or wriggle
This is important

Western footpath on the Wearmouth (Town) bridge closed completely from 13 October (didn't see how long for, I was concentrating on my driving) for repair/resurfacing work. Surely they're not going have that and the Keel footbridge closed simultaneously?

Be a bit daft if it’s any longer than 5 days when we’re home to Wolves Sat 18th. The eastern path could be used obviously but considering the vast majority walk to the bridge from the western side of the city centre it would create a fair bit of carnage with all the roads needing crossing. Would be pretty shit planning when they could surely wait a short amount of extra time until the Keel is open and then do it.

Even worse now the subway next to (the former) Bridge House is shut. That was handy for me when I'm on my bike. Think they'll close that for good like they did the one on the north side.

Aye on the rare occasions I walked the eastern footpath I always used the subway for ease and speed to save waiting for the lights.
