Keel Crossing [opened 18.10.25] - compendium thread

Not dissimilar to the original wearmouth bridge and not dissimilar to many of the bridges across the Thames ie a flat deck bridge. Got to think ongoing maintenance must be at the forefront of their mind particularly with costs of maintaining wearmouth bridge (look at cost to maintain Tyne Bridge)

If it had the arch of the old Wearmouth Bridge, and lost the barbed wire fencing, it would probably look alright

You mean the underside arch? Yeah I agree aesthetically but suspect the ongoing maintenance cost to paint and treat a steel structure might have been the reason why they’ve not went with that option.

Fantastic news, another positive for the city. I’m just waiting for ‘Sunderland Global Media’ or some tedious nimby helmet on one of the other local groups to call it a waste of money and how the councillors will be taking backhanders left right and centre.

That's utter bollocks they have never, ever derided any development in this city.

SGM editorial view is that the Keel Square and Riverside Sunderland development is a massive win for the city, and like it or not, is a masterstroke by the council.

The resident moaners of course don't like to hear this, but that's just a subsection of Sunderland's population as a whole and you will find them on any large platform.

Stop crying man I was talking about the twats that respond. Mind the rapist taxi driver thread was worded in such a way (described only as ‘driver’) it attracted a load of racist arseholes immediately assuming it was a forrin. Turns out he was white and English as peas. Oh and why are they sharing a story about an immigrant stabbing someone in Southampton 320 miles away? What’s that got to do with Sunderland?

That's the line all the papers used and the purpose of it was to stop people speculating or scapegoating a taxi firm, because he was a "self-employed" taxi driver.

To say that there were racial implications behind it, is also bollocks. Especially when they followed up immediately after with his name as soon as it was made public.

There's also no rule on where or what it can share stories about. A page that calls itself Sunderland GLOBAL media probably isn't purely about local stuff, is it?

There are loads of national level news stories shared on that page.

It's pretty obvious that with huge crowds anticipated at peak times, including more than a few knackers amongst them, that the railings would need to be high like this. That doesn't stop them being aesthetically pleasing, but money is tight.

Nah don't agree with this, I think it's great putting a community next to the stadium. All new stadiums are in sterile industrial estates (which the SOL has Been for 25 years)...roker Park and all old stadiums were built within the communities. This will bring some character to the place. Also the town needs as many houses around it's centre now to build the economy around and get people spending

It’s the opportunity cost. Once housing is placed on a site it landlocked for housing indefinitely thus preventing future growth. The sheepfolds are adjacent to the city centre so should have leisure retail and office opportunities. Also the central part of Sunderland has been identified as needing jobs. When you put housing on it, this opportunity is lost.

That's just the reality of some Sunderland people in general. Isn't the Echo exactly the same?

If you're going to make a Sunderland based news outlet that gets large enough to cover a certain portion of the population then it is a mathematical certainty you will get these people.
