I call it The Northern Spire. I thought it was crap at first but quickly warmed to it.
As a city we're obsessed with the past and I think it holds us back, so having a name with no link to history works for me.
End of the day it's just a name, and I don't care too much one way or the other. I was up in arms about The Stadium of Light but does it matter in the scheme of things?

I think these crap decisions hinder us slightly.

Calling it the Joseph Swan Bridge would have highlighted how important our city is and has been, it would have made every passing person for the next 100 years go 'who?' and whip Thier phone out and find out that such a bloke was born in Pallion. It would have made every kid born in Sunderland realise that the can change the world. It would have been iconic

The Northern Spire literally means fuck all

I don't think there's anything wrong with recognising the past. I wish we had a shipbuilding museum. I love the dray and horse sculpture at keel square. 'keel' square

The should have given some proper thought to the Northern Spire bridge, as it really is a cracking bridge, and is/will be a Sunderland icon.

Not sure it matters too much for the footbridge as it's pretty much just a brutalist concrete structure. Almost seems a bit of a shame calling it something good like Brewery Bridge, or Vaux Viaduct.

They’ve went for the cheapest design but should have done something that’s interesting. Should be looking at adding landmarks to the city centre

That said it will help the redevelopment of the riverside area

It's going to be a decent span and elevation above the river so hopefully even the cheaper design will still look good.

I just call it the new bridge.

Couple that with Cowies Way (love that one as I worked there in the 90’s) and Paul Watson Way it’s quite the juxtaposition.

When ever the houses are built I would think that it will be highly unlikely that there will be a path directly from the SOL through their estate, and the parking permits will keep match day parkers at bay also.
