Keane on why he turned

Some on here proper lost their shit over Keane mind. A couple of posters went on like teenage girls when their fav band break up 😂

I thought from the beginning it was a stretch for him to come here (especially as we went after him before) and yet some seemed adamant he’d leave a ridiculously well paid (and easy) job in the media, to come to League 1 on a considerably lower salary and work with a tighter budget.

Maybe had the chuckle brothers not still been on board things may have been more different but even then I suspect a lot of work would still have had to be done - not to mention acknowledging the risk of the appointment.

I promise this is not a dig but the increase in crowds predicted by some was f***ing miles off as well
1000+ page thread clamouring for him and now the majority of this forum claiming they didn’t actually want him

Tbf mate, 900 of them pages were probably just the same 10 posters 😂

The amount of people on this thread hanging on a tongue in cheek comment is unbelievable!
Of course he knew what the money would be, you don’t spend a week negotiating a role without knowing the salary. The reason he isn’t here is because ‘ the club wasn’t right’ read into that what you like but I think we all know it’s about the structure and set up of the club.

Salary would have been part of the negotiations mate, as would length of contract.

Don’t get me wrong though, the club are a f***ing shambles and have made a total mess of the season but there are two sides to every story - not least he may not have fancied leaving a very easy job in the media.

As I posted last night, I suspect the club knew it was a tough sell but totally lost control of the story. They should have just appointed Neil on the Tuesday

Should have been on the Monday

You got the impression they liked Roy more than Sunderland the last week or so like.

A big part of me wanted him to come back but a small part never. His time here provided some of my best times as a SAFC fan, I didn’t want the clusterfuck that is our club now to tarnish his legacy.

It might have worked but we all know how mentally weak and quite frankly thick most of our players are. It probably would have been a disaster. Times have changed and I don’t think Keane has.

I asked a question, in that humongous Keane thread that threatened to rip a hole in the fabric of space, and was full of people offering their children as sacrifices if Keane would only accept our worship.

It was something like “... what would people say if it came out that Keane was the one who was f***ing about, and it was him making it difficult etc”. And it was apparent, at the time, that this perspective was not acceptable. Keane can do no wrong. Give him anything. Anything.

But dust has settled and a few slightly more nuanced perspectives are now being expressed.

So I feel safe in saying that I think he realised the difficulty of the job, the remoteness of any possibility of ‘glory’, the need to work within an existing system rather than create his own cult of personality - and he thought ‘But I’m Roy Keane’ ...and rather than simply say ‘no thanks’ he strung the club along a bit, just to feed his own ego. See how far they’d go.

I have nothing on which to base this, but that doesn’t stop anyone else. So there.

He shouldn’t really be considered a serious applicant for future managerial jobs elsewhere because I don’t really think he wants the hassle, whatever he says. But he will be. And he’ll enjoy the attention.

So much for him ‘100% agreeing to come’, sounds like it never even got half way to being that close to done.

Every single person trying to claim he had signed are utter bellends and have been proven to be full of horse shit.

There is absolutely nothing in those quotes.

He was nothing more than a PR stunt. There isn’t anything about the football club that would remotely attract a Roy Keane type.
I think the club half knew Keane isn't interested in management. I think the desire is gone. But we still pissed about for 2 weeks.

That thread man. FFS went on and f***ing on. Probably same " over the road" and nor wonder with people saying it was done. Loada shite.

I love Keane me like, still do, and who could blame him not wanting to risk potentially his last crack at management at this basket case of a club with the uncertainty behind the scenes now on top of everything else. Keane was the one I wanted here to replace Johnson and I was gutted when the story broke it wasn’t happening. Felt like a major kick in the balls (another one).

All that said, from reading those quotes it doesn’t sound like he was or would’ve been fully committed and a lot of the clamour for him to come back (from me included) now that’s all died down I would say was based on emotion and nostalgia, so in hindsight I think it might be for the best for both parties. Keane doesn’t jeopardise his legacy and we get a manager who seems hungrier and might be better suited to the challenge of this league.

he clearly doesn’t want to try management again as much as he says he does
I was just about to say the same. I think he probably sees opportunities like this to boost his media career. If he really wanted to be successful in management, he’d be out there cutting his teeth.

The bloke won't ever manage again bookmark this he's a f***ing coward and a gobshite.

He's like Gary Neville loves to be in a comfy studio criticizing everyone and everything but Neville will never ever go back in to management because he's a coward

That’s a bit strong. Settle down petal.

Love Keano but having read that I think we’ve dodged a massive bullet. He can say what he wants about money but I strongly suspect if he believed he was good enough to get us promoted he would have snapped our hand off at the job. Not quite sure what he means when he says ‘the right club’ because he’s never going to walk into a top 10 premier league club with everything in place for him to just continue floating.

I wanted him in but am happy enough with Neil. Absolutely no hard feelings towards him, I doubt we'll ever get the full story (the club has seemingly been briefing that they didn't give him a 2nd interview, despite giving one to no-hopers like Lennon and McCann).

He remains one of my favourite managers in my time as a fan, and I don't blame him one bit for not fancying his chances working with the tinpot arseholes we have running the show these days.

A few people saying that they wanted Keane and that it was partly down to nostalgia.

Which leads me to ponder: When I get nostalgic about the club I think of managers like Stokoe (for obvious reasons) and Peter Reid (for obvious reasons) but not Keane. Maybe it’s because the first two bouts of nostalgia would be about experiences I had, games and players, people I was with etc. With Keane it would have been about what Keane said, did etc. Apart from celebrating at Luton when we were promoted I don’t recall many ‘moments’. I recall loads from the times of the other managers mentioned. And some from other times when I’d have to think a bit about who the manager actually was. Maybe it’s age thing.

Nostalgia isn’t what it used to be etc.
