Jury duty

Just say you're clairvoyant and know the outcome. I did this about 20 year ago and got out of it 😎
I have done jury service twice (court martials), loved them, really interesting
It's all well and good f you have time on your hands, not so much if you don't.

For years I've wanted to do jury duty as in my last job I would have received full pay.

I changed job recently and my new employer doesn't pay, and lo and behold I've been called up.

The amount you can claim doesn't come anywhere close to covering my salary.

Like if it went in for any length of time I wouldn't be able to pay my mortgage.

Surely it's not right that they can put people in this position? Are my family expected to lose their home?

you can ask to be exempt.

However you will need a valid reason and “I’m really well paid and can’t be expected to live on normal money” might not be quite the defence you will need.

Good luck though, it was one of the most unpleasant experiences of my life.

If I was called, I think I'd probably argue that my religion prevents me from taking part. After all, Jesus tells us not to judge and that only God can judge. Ironically, this is recorded in the book I'm asked to swear on when taking an oath before someone called the 'judge'. I've a feeling if I kicked up a fuss about this, I wouldn't be asked back.

I tried this didn’t work but my speech impediment did though

would have taken half the proceedings on the first day to say the oath

A mate of mine got called up, to Durham. Basically he pitched up at 9am, didn’t get picked, told to come back after lunch, spent the mornings pottering around Durham, went back at lunchtime then got sent home, same all week. He loved it lol

Got called to go last week. First time for me -what a fanny on.

A room of over a hundred of us. About thirty got called into our court room. Both sides get to explain right and wrong, reasonable doubt etc. then voir dire where they ask some of us specific questions. Then they selected seven to sit on the jury the rest of us sent back out into the main pool again from which some were selected to go through the whole process again in another court room and I was thankfully let go.

Those who were selected had to go back two days later for the actual case, this was just the preamble.

The case? Driving without a licence. All that f***ing about just to decide on whether a bloke had a licence or not. And they wonder why people have no enthusiasm for their civic duty.

My wife got called up last year but she got out of it quite easily.
