Not having a go at any teams before anyone gets defensive, but how would people feel if a rule was introduced in premier league and Durham cricket league that say 3 of the first team had to have played junior cricket at the club. I think it would help to ensure that clubs invested in junior cricket (I know lots do already). I recognise lots of issues in enforcing but I personally think it would be a good move, maybe phase in over next 5 years. I know this maybe difficult in Durham cricket league as some teams no longer have junior sides so maybe it should only apply to premier league and division 1 of dcl.

It should certainly be encouraged. Maybe not a rule to have x players but but bonus points for juniors or “homegrown” players?

it’s something that already happens in the hetton Lyons Sunday leagues.
As you say could be tough on clubs with no junior set ups.

I think idea is good in principle and totally get where you coming from as years ago players mainly stayed at one club and that was good for cricket in this area.

However the logistics of it, would probably be unworkable in this day and age.

In 2013 I watched a game at Jesmond, a NEPL 1st team game between Newcastle and Tynemouth. In the company of a friend of mine who was a Tynemouth supporter, he told me that the Tynemouth team had 10 players who had played U11 cricket for the club. The only exception was a young "overseas" player from South Africa.
Newcastle's team had NO players that had played for the club at any level of junior cricket !
So yes, it can be done.
Tynemouth have been in the top league of the NEPL since it began, competing with all of the teams that pay out lots of money to bring players in.

Would this not be the case at most clubs anyway?
Surely more could this already applies to them than couldn’t ?
Good idea regardless, possibly some form of bonus point for winning with x home grown players.

Surely to invest in junior cricket would mean to ensure you have junior teams from under 11 upwards and also a Sunday Academy 3rd team as a minimum. Teams who don't have junior set ups are the worry not those who don't have a few playing on a Saturday afternoon

I think it’s fair to say teams don’t choose to not have teams all the way through from under 11 to Sunday Teams.

Sometimes that can’t ensure there have them as they is simply not enough people playing the game

Sounds fine in practice, but in reality the more rules you impose the more difficult you are making things for clubs to continue.

I don't get why there is so much clamour for clubs to buy in players, when apart from a trophy there is no benefit to the club. They are just paying mercenaries for a season when that money could be better spent on the club facilities

I agree but my point was by saying your first team has to have 3 players who come through the club junior system wont improve junior participation unless they aren't playing senior cricket due to lack of opportunity due to paid players which I can see at some clubs.

If clubs have not had junior teams and paid a lot of players then that is a different issue I guess.
