Joe Root calls for a reduction in county cricker

Excellent coverage on this issue on the latest episode of ‘Following On’

I wouldn't be taking any notice of anything Joe Root says mind. Outstanding player and seems like a nice bloke but if there were a dictionary definition for "ECB puppet", his picture would be right next to it.

1000%.
Pretty sure he would have played if it was down to him

I’m not so sure, I’m fairly confident that if a player goes to the gaffers at Team England and stresses just how important it is for them to play county cricket they would be allowed to do so.

We already had that, it was called the Blast. IN FACT, it was US that created the concept and gave it to the world.

The concept is usually credited to Martin Crowe and New Zealand although we were arguably the 1st to have a credible professional tournament.

Neither is really true though. I was playing 120 ball cricket as an evening game in the late 1970s in Stockton. It was 15×8 as that gave you marginally more daylight. The 2000 code formally dropped eight balls as a legitimate over length, and some leagues felt obliged to switch to 20×6. I was playing T20 as a result before either Martin Crowe or the ECB ever were. It’s a handy format.

Root was not in the best of form coming into the start of the County Championship. He's now picked up two half centuries, a century and 150+ in 5 games.

Its strange to make this statement when these matches are probably doing his confidence and game the world of good coming into the summer.

He can talk as much as he likes. It's down to the counties - most of whom are member owned- to vote for it.

I'd forgotten the IPL was still on...and a quick check on the IPL thread on here shows that since April 29 there have only been two posts there.

So either everybody else has forgotten or they've just lost interest.

#CountyCricketRules.

Buttler, Root,Strauss think experience of those three opinions should count for something.

Pretty sure what they have achieved in the game combined merits respect for their views and opinions

Not sure what financial gain, Strauss or Root got by suggesting less games.
Strauss was paid a lot of money by the ECB to carry out a High Performance Review.

In my opinion he would have had to keep his paymasters happy by knowing they were looking for ways to reduce the County Championship. These type of reviews should be carried out entirely independently.
