Jhon Lucumi - Transfer Rumour

Didn't we move for Alderete due to wasting too much time with Bologna?

Given we're already stacked in the CB department, maybe the links to the young Belgian would be a better move and bring him on over the course of a few seasons to progress rather than a player on big wages who'll probably expect to play every week.

The lad they signed off West Brom, Torbjørn Heggem, has been the better player this season. Maybe we should sign him instead?

I assumed this one was dead as soon as we signed Alderete, I don't think we were pursuing him after that, and definitely not once we had Geertrudia.

Sign gerty on a perm and bring in a RW and it’s a decent window.

If in addition we bring in a promising LB who can learn from Reinildo and another CM of the same ilk, while offloading some of our championship standard players and it’s a fantastic window.

In what sense do you think? I thought Lucumi looked better
To be fair, I was basing that off general metrics. Ive only watched Bologna a few times this season and he looked half assed. I just looked into advanced data and while Heggem has been better in defensive duels, Lucumi easily outshines him in possession for pass completion, progressive passes, and progressive carries. Thats likely what we're willing to pay the fee for, or were.

Can't see us revisiting this to be honest. We are well stacked at centre back now with Ballard, Mukiele, Alderete, Geetruida. Only way we look at this is if they see Mukiele or Geertruida as a full back long term.

Id prefer money was spent elsewhere
The real question is - is Lucumi a better player than Hjelde, who currently occupies one of the 'overseas' left-sided central defender berths in the squad ? I would respectfully suggest that the answer is obvious. Thus swapping them out brings in a player who could genuinely be easily used in the team. I don't think that the same could be said for Hjelde.

The second question then is - who would you rather have as the replacement centre-back on the matchday subs bench - Alese or O'Nein or Lucumi ? Again, I think that the answer is obvious. Lucumi would also keep Alderete on his toes and be a ready-made alternative in the event of suspensions, injuries or loss of form.

The process now must surely be incremental improvements, with the least good existing players being replaced with better when they become available.

Having Ballard, Mukiele and Geertruida functioning as the right-sided centre-backs (with the latter two also providing excellent cover for the right-back slot) and Alderete, Lucumi and Alese being the options for the left-side centre-back (with the latter also being able to play left-back), would see us well provided for.
If they think he’s better than Geertruida, they might not decide to make the loan permanent and get in Lucumi instead.
Geertruida provides excellent service on the right-side of the defence in both the centre-back and full-back positions. He should also be recruited without a shadow of doubt.
He's 27 / 28 so not a youngster, desperately need creavity criminal if we dont sort out the right wing at least.
Sorting out the right-wing and recruiting another left-sided centre-back are not mutually exclusive options.
We're running out of space in the squad for non-homegrown players.
Masuaku is likely to be transferred out as he's not inspired confidence and Le Bris has recognised his short-comings. However, it is a valid point.

I'd probably disagree with that initial view to an extent. It's not about individual comparison of players and like-for-like replacement with our current squad for me. It's about how we use our few remaining foreign signings for maximum effect in the short and medium term. For me, there are bigger needs than more centre halves at present. I'd put wide players, strikers (simply because its the hardest and most expensive position to recruit) and both creative and all-round midfielders currently ahead of another centre half. Then it becomes a case of how many foreign players we're willing to move on from to create that space. We'd already be moving players on just to get most of that list done. Always good for the club to retain some flexibility too.

Good players are always needed, if he prepared to sit on the bench is a different matter.
Well stocked at CB now and does anyone actually know if he’s all that

Weird obsession on signing him like if he’s that good and cheap surely he’ll have loads of teams sniffing about him

A LB/LCB hybrid ( like a left sided Mukiele) would be a great signing. Happy for that to be a young lad who can cover and grow into the role.

Not when we’re already pushing our maximum number of foreign players allowed. CB is probably the least priority position at this point
Quality wise perhaps but really it’s not as well stocked as it seems. Mukiele and Hume are the RB competition leaving Ballard, Alderete and Geertruida as the central defensive options at least some of the time. I love O’Nien but I don’t think we’ll see him as a real option so I think we probably are one short at CB ( or RB if Mukiele is seen as CB). We have Hjelde and Alese that could play there too but I think both will be away on loan in Jan.
