It's not unusual for clubs to be willing to pay a little more in order to spread the payments.
You'd have to be very cash rich not to care about this for a big transfer, very few clubs would be happy to pay a big fee in one go.
I suspect it's partially that we don't really have the cash in hand to pay so much up front, and partially that we thought we could ultimately get him for less than the release clause anyway.
I think savvy agents will soon start insisting that release clauses allow the fee to be paid in installments rather than up front.
