There's a reason why we keep pushing for him for so long. Either Ghisolfi rates him hugely, either KLD got into Football Manager mode once again, Xhaka style. We'll get him IMO, as Bologna can't afford to lose €35m + a top player in 10 months time.

What's more likely here is that if we met the release clause we's have to pay the full fee upfront. Now that's gone, we can negotiate instalments. Ive been arguing that all year, we've been splitting it pro rata
 
The player doesn't want to discuss a new deal at Bologna being in the last 10-11 months of contract, wants to sign for Sunderland with a 5 years deal on the table. Bologna rejected the £23.5m (€28m) offer. Speakman is negotiating, a new offer is imminent according to the press.
Bologna has no other option but to try and get a few millions more.
