Jhon Lucumi - Transfer Rumour

I do get the worry about O'Nien in the PL with better (more aware?) refs and VAR but he'd know that himself. He's not going to be doing the same things week in and week out knowing he'd probably get 7-10 red cards a season. He might come across as this lovable, cuddly character but the lad has built himself a career from being let go by Watford, plodding on with Wycombe in L2 and helping us from L1 to PL. He's not going to throw any opportunities he's given away by going on daft. He's never going to be a top quality PL CB and I'm sure the lad will accept him limits but he will certainly do a job and not let anybody down if and when he's called upon.

I don’t disagree with you

Ten mins here and there he might be ok, not as a starter though

I agree but I don't think anyone is expecting us to start Luke at CB in the PL. He deserves a shot at his place in the squad though. I'm not going to say he's never let us down because even he himself has said at times, he has but the way he rolls with the punches and keeps going, the commitment he has to the club and the area, he's quite obviously loved around the club from top to bottom through to the fan base, he deserves this opportunity.

How's that being a mood hoover?
Simply saying a certain player is not good enough to start in the prem,
When we sign this lad and if we get lucumi then please tell me where he gets in the side? Because Ballard will be ahead of him so enlighten me please.
So not good enough to start, but would be good enough after what ? 60mins ? 65mins ? 70 mins ?

Surely, if they are not good enough to start, then they are not good enough at all.

i would respectfully suggest that it is perfectly reasonable for the club to bring in players who they believe are incrementally better than the existing players in the squad for that position. However, it is ridiculous to suggest that the players who are effectively being bumped down the list are not (or will not be) good enough. To do so is to deny any capacity for further improvement and development in players. None of us actually know what any individual player's optimal development level is. The proof of the pudding is in the eating.

What I don’t understand is prior to promotion, the narrative on here was “if we don’t go up this year, we’ll lose all our best players. They’ll be picked off by Premier League clubs”.

We get promotion and suddenly all of these players who were going to be sold are nowhere near the level required for the Prem.

The truth is somewhere in between I suspect- the step up is huge, but Liverpools squad isn’t full employers with the quality of Salah which is what some seem to expect.

That's all very true. We have a lot of young players who aren't good enough, but we are developing them and they could be good enough to play in the Premier League in the future. Ultimately this probably means that we will end up doing what other Premier League clubs do and loaning some of them out, but we would almost certainly have lost some of the promising ones if we had stayed down and would have needed to sell to keep the club on a good financial footing.

Anyway, back on topic. Which plane is Lucumi on?

Fair post. Some supporters seem adamant we have to rip up everything that got us here in a bid to stay in the division.

How good would one player have to be to single-handedly keep up a promoted side?
Maradona maybe, but few others.

Kelvin Davis

Donald Love
Papa Djilibodji
Alan Stubbs
George McCartney

John Oster
Dean Whitehead
Diego Maradona
Andy Welsh

Jon Stead
Andy Gray

Think I'm right in saying everyone one of those lads, apart from Diego, obviously, played for us in the PL. It's harsh on a couple of those lads (Whitehead apart, who as some will know I hate the bloke with a passion, not just for footballing reasons) did a job but even putting Maradona in that side isn't going to solve the multitude of problems is it. It would go down with less than 5 points.

What is he because he’s certainly not a midfielder either?

He’s played about 95 percent of his games for Sunderland at centre back ffs
He was bought has a midfielder. In fact I think he has played over 130 times in midfield in his career. He has also played right back,, left back, on the left and on the right, That was my point , he is versatile and can do a job when needed FFS.

So you are saying he's going to drop the traits that made him an asset for us? Sh*thousing is 80% of his game, without that he's a bang average player, he knows it, I know it, the lord knows it, only sentimental fans don't know it.

Apparently you can teach an old dog new tricks, and a 30 year old player who's never been good enough in his career to get into the premier league, or even to find himself in a promotion fighting squad until us, is suddenly going to be good enough if he just changes his entire playing style...

He's recognised his limitations and carved out a niche for himself as a charismatic leader, wind up merchant to the opposition, and gamesmanship, sh*thouser extraordinaire.

He's cost us 8-9 goals in each of the last 2 seasons with his mistakes, yes ive been counting. This figure will be worse in the prem. He always goes for the man, not the ball, because that's all he's good enough to do. You can't do that in this league, the prem forwards will love him, they are too sharp and will anticipate him leaving his foot in and get the call every time with VAR.

So what exactly he going to do for us in this league, besides being liability? Even his leadership role has demolished now it's practically an entire new team with a premier league leader, Xhaka.

I also stated earlier not good enough for prem, so yes not good at all,
As another poster said, the proof will be in the pudding, if we get lucumi and the fella that's just landed then not a chance will he be starting, he may scrape the bench but only maybe.
