Had a good friend work for the club for a while and even he got things wrong at this time of year. Players he said were at the training ground, or who had flown somewhere to meet our reps, agents were finalising deals, things that seemed almost done, that then fell through.

If he posted those on twitter (if it existed, this was 10 years ago or more, Bruce era) he'd be called a bullshitter, even though he was more connected than most at that time.

This is true.

When we had Dwight Yorke, someone I know did regular work for him and told him he was going to sign for a club in the US. It all fell through and he ended up staying for another year.

Someone I know rented a house to an Arsenal player who gave notice because he was off to Bayern Munich. Two weeks later changed his mind and is still there! Even good information can be made to look daft by things changing

I think this is true. And often a club will be in soft talks with a few players in one position and they pull out of them when they get their priority player. It doesn't mean the interest wasn't genuine, but if you ITK'd every single conversation the club had this summer it would be ludicrous, and about players we don't even know we've spoken to
