We were out at sea, but it was quite spectacular seeing the rocket go up overhead - fast as fuck by the way.

You don't actually need escape velocity if you have propulsion.

Escape velocity is for a projectile, think catapult.

I was lucky enough to watch a space shuttle launch. Couldn't believe how fast it took off. We were listening to someone's live radio broadcast. I seem to recall that after a matter of minutes, it was over Saudi Arabia.....mind boggling!
