James Rew

Sounds like they might even move Bethell up to open and Rew at 3.

Like were playing Brian Lara international cricket 2005 on easy mode. You could make the rabbits belt 6s galore.
I read/heard that idea, I get there can only be 1 ball between opening and batting 3 but its the toughest job in the world of cricket Opening in England.

Some hack on Cricinfo suggesting he gets picked as an opener.

That would be absolutely peak McCullum when you have a Lions opener (McKinney) with a double century this season.

They’ve been talking about it in a lot of places - Wisden/Talksport/BBC - and I don’t get this fascination whatsoever of wanting to force people to do things they don’t do and haven’t done.

Mind I will say that I don’t want McKinney to be picked just yet, I’d much rather see him being the next one after this one (if that makes sense). Another season of FC cricket would be far better for him and his development in my own view.

Agree with this, McKinney is a 21yo who is just starting his 2nd full season as an opener in CC, so there's no reason to rush him in. Let him learn his game at county level for a couple of years and see where he is at, rather than throwing him in the deep end into an England setup which is a bit of a circus atm.

As a Durham supporter I wouldn't want to lose another key player to England and their whacko coaching methods either.

It's the Australia method picking the best XI players and worrying about the order afterwards.

Harmison had a good point that right now it's square pegs in round holes. And that maybe Bethell doesn't play the first few tests because he'd have played 0 cricket at all before the 1st test.

However Somerset coach had said there's been discussions with Rew about opening for them.

Seeing as there’s no obvious alternative I’d be happy for England to try something different and open with one of Smith/Rew/Bethell to get them in the team.

Smith and Rew are clearly the best batters in England at the minute outside of Root and Brook so you know what why not try to get them all in if the alternatives are Crawley, Hameed and a probably not ready McKinney.

He's a big talent but I am really against him opening, it's a specialist position. Give the lad a chance in the middle order when it arises and allow him the best opportunity to settle into the team and do well. Gay is on fire and is a natural opener, there's no need for another vibes pick.
