Jack Clarke

Where do you reckon we’ll be if we get promoted next year?
Depends how we get there. If we struggle through the playoffs we will be just like Southampton this season - nowhere near good enough. However, if we dominate this league from Christmas onwards like Reidy's 105 pointers did, then we might have a chance of staying up.

Has he scored a goal or registered an assist yet?
Possibly the poorest signing we’ve made, watched him a lot for you and he genuinely looks like a different player now. Most players get better under McKenna but he’s really been thrown into a team that is struggling.

We’re going down as must of us thought. The outside media/podcasts really skew perception. George Hirst has been a real miss for us, would be pretty confident of 5/6 more points if we hadn’t have had to flog Delap every week. We’ve not been hammered yet but games against Arsenal/chelsea over Xmas are worrying. There’s not that much between the bottom 6 in terms of quality. Everyone else in the league had some sort of parachute/ prem money/ players from past prem seasons other than us so being competitive is a fair effort.

That said, the journey is better than the destination
He was brilliant for us in the Championship but in the one game he played against Premier League opposition last season (Newcastle ironically) he was utterly anonymous against an out of sorts Trippier, who had him in his back pocket for the whole game. Maybe he’s just not good enough for the top flight.

You can't read too much into that Newcastle game, we were dreadful and the whole hype got to us, whilst they played a full strength 11 without injuries.

Clarke was massively effective for us, hugging the left touch-line, dragging defenders out of position and cutting in. I really thought Ipswich had signed him for this role, with Leif Davis providing the overlap. Instead he's been played in this inside forward position that he totally unsuited to. The manager has to take some responsibility here for being inflexible and playing him out of position.

Can we judge him off Beale and the time of that game?

Mags imo go incredibly lucky not to play us flying under Mowbray or since we had RLB.

In true SMB style he’s being completely written off. Things can change it doesn’t take much.
He’s not a top Premiership standard player but he’s a talented boy who should have the capability to do well in a bottom half premiership team.
For us the team was in the end literally built around him let’s face it he was just about our only consistent source of goals.
It was never going to be like that at Ipswich when playing it’s been in a different role and once the whole team is finding it a struggle then it’s going to be doubly hard.
Sometimes though it just takes a goal to spark someone off and confidence grows there no reason why it can’t happen especially if he’s played in his more familiar role and with the help of a good left back behind him which they’ve got.

Ipswich won the league in the 1960s, had a very good team in the 80s.
Correct
Was very surprised( maybe I shouldn’t have been !) when I saw that comment about Ipswich Fc
Been very good well run club in my lifetime -they were a great attacking side with a strong defence -Kevin Beattie at the heart was immense

That was Alf Ramsey. They were in Div 3 South when he became manager, and win the League 3 years later. One of his key players was Bobby Robson, who, of course, managed their 80s team and was responsible for bringing in Muhren and Thyssen.

Im quite happy with the 2 lads that have replaced him.

Jack Clarke was excellent for us. I still feel we got short changed with the fee.

He’s started slowly, for whatever reason, but I still think there is a good PL player there.

We haven’t missed him particularly because others have stepped up (and we are a better team in general than last year).

The end

Frankly if you leave a club like Sunderland to go to a nothing club in the middle of the footballing desert of Suffolk then you’re an absolute nugget anyway
Bit arrogant that . They have been way more successful than us in my life time and the team they had in the eighties was outstanding. We haven't had a team anywhere close to that level since before most on here was born.

We have young players who are improving with every game, and are only a powerful no9 away from rinsing this division.

I suddenly get the impression we knew what we were doing with Clarke all along as we had Watson coming through.
