What better option would there have been? Look I loved Clarke, I was a massive fan, I still am and I hope he succeeds. But the fact is he had been a proper top championship player for 2 seasons and that was the best offer he had. What would an extra year in the championship have got him? The only way he gets a better move is to perform at a higher level now.

Pick up an injury and there goes that plan up in smoke.
These players have a finite shelf life and shouldn’t be leaving any money on the table. Make as much as you can for as long as you can is my take on it.

If I was a player of Clarke's ability I'd back myself to get a better move than Ipswich.

I'd actually have belief in myself to think I'm better than a relegation favourite.

He can have all the belief he wants, the fact is nobody at that moment in time thinks he is better than that. There was not a better move for him. Explain how he gets a better move than what was on the table seeing as what he did the last 2 seasons didn’t get him one ?

We can agree to disagree. I don't think you can do it easily. Of course it can be done, but not easily and not something you'd choose over having significantly more.

And there'll be 10 years more of inflation too. And you would need the money you get back from it to also cover another 30+ years of compound inflation. It gets eroded in real terms very quickly over an extended period.

Honest these people are just daft. These lads will have lived a life of stunning houses , driving amazing cars, holidays most people can only dream of. But they shouldn’t move to make treble the money on offer because they can get by on not much money when they retire. I am sure they will be fine in their 2 bed terrace in Pallion ( sorry folks from Pallion, had to pick somewhere) sure it was the plan all along rather than go and earn massive money so they live the life forever.

It's very easy to get carried away when watching the same players do well week in week out. It's easy to forget we often wear red and white tinted specs.

And that's before you think about the risk of a career ending injury or significant loss of form, the reasonable cost of a house to buy (upwards of £2m), cost of sending a couple of kids to private school (£500k), cost of helping those kids buy a house (£500k).

But no, turn down the money in your career and at 35 the only thing that matters is the stats from the past 15 years from playing below the premier league.
