Jack Clarke

I might be completely thick, but do transfer fees not also take into account the wages a player is on, which can be seen to boost their value?

E.g. you could have an absolute wonderkid generational talent playing for a League One / bottom of Champo team, but since they're earning peanuts that drags their value down, compared to a "worse" player from a top end championship / bottom PL team who earns significantly more and is therefore higher value? I'm talking with Footy Manager in mind so this is probably complete bollocks like
They will take into account how much the selling club wants to sell for, how much money the buying club has and is willing to spend on them, how long is left on said player’s contract.

You get into law of diminishing returns the better the player is as well. A £100m footballer obviously isn’t better than 11 players who cost nothing.

Well, that one foot kept us in this league last season

It did indeed albeit we'd been sussed, lost a decent gaffer who hadn't enough left in the tank to tweak things with the resources to hand and ultimately finished poorly. Even if we were strapped for cash I'd have gone all out for a relatively cheap Mendy to add another dimension to our play. The Vic Halom solution. :)

I do think that him not cutting it at spurs last time and possibly even that non performance in the derby will have made more established prem sides think twice about signing him.

They’re two different points in a way.
1) Have we been low balled, not imo
2) If you’re convinced we aren’t going to spend and recruit then what diffence does £5m make. Not going to spend it regardless

What??

Yes we have. Whilst I don't expect something like 30m for Clarke, such was his obvious match winning quality and age at this level then a starting point should be 20m, not a deal which may amount to that.

I'm not convinced we aren't going to spend. I have no idea what you mean or what you're trying to imply. We're likely going to spend now, as a result of selling Clarke. That potentially will be reduced by both the add ons and the sell on percentage before you even get to the "extra 5m".

We will spend a fair chunk of it. Whether they’ll be any good or not is another matter.

Based on the last previous 4 transfer windows, I’m not getting my hopes up. Mid-table beckons.
We won’t spend a chunk of it at all

So we have to sell for a shite fee? Why does he have to be sold now? Because the club are spineless and scared his value drops.
I’d not call it a “shite” fee tbh. What do you think he’s worth? We don’t have to sell but for various reasons the club have decided to do so. Whether it’s to fund recruitment, PSR, meeting their value idk. Clearly no one was going to bid higher than this and with him refusing to sign a new deal if you were going to sell then now is the time
