Jack Clarke

I know. But that's what the Ross Stewart money was spent on. The fact is that when we sold a player we reinvested the money.

I think when we were just getting out of league 1 the scattergun approach to recruitment wasn’t too bad as the standard expected wasn’t as high.

But we’ve wasted a lot of money on shite like Ba and as we start looking towards the PL it’s vital they get the decisions right.

And the squad got worse.

And the balance of the money has seemingly disappeared in to the ether.
Stewart hadn't played for the best part of a year; the club did well to get the fee they got for him. The players they added with the funds haven't yet proven successful but it's objective that when we've sold a player for a good fee, we've bought other players with the money. That can't be argued.

So suggesting they'd bank all funds raised by selling Clarke and not reinvesting any info the squad, is probably inaccurate based on the evidence above.

I think every fan is aware by now what the plans and ideas are of the people running the football club. I've got no issue with it but it does sometimes leave you feeling there's a real missed opportunity.

I dont think any fan is getting the wool pulled over their eyes at this point though.

The frustration is that it would/will spiral,

Sell off Clarke now, and we don’t get promoted. Where does that leave us with regard to holding on to the likes of Neil, Bellingham, Ballard, Rigg, Cirkin, Patterson, Hume in a years time? Do we expect these lads to hang around indefinitely in the hope that one day - at an indeterminate point however many years in the future - the club might prioritise promotion? Good luck with that.

Nobody has ever seen a pile of bank notes score a goal.

They'll probably be terrified of losing money next summer when his price comes down.
We have business people in charge of our football club now not pissy panted little boys. If we got £8m + add ons for an injured player with 1 year left on his contract why do you think they'd be "terrified" of having to make a good deal for one of the best players in the league?

I don't disagree with that. I think the club us at a stick or twist moment with regards to kicking on and it feels like we've just decided to ride it out.

Well I was resigned to the fact that we would lose Clarke this window and it was only a matter of time.

Then Skunkhater posted and gave us some hope that we would be able to hang on to him and he'd sign a new deal on improved terms.

Now if he does go it's gonna feel like a kick in the balls.
I hope we stand firm and try and extract the maximum amount of money that we can.
Clarke can do better than Ipswich and we can hopefully do better than 20m plus add-ons.
The best outcome is surely that he remains at Sunderland and pens a new deal. If he's motivated by money that isn't going to happen here. We can't compete with Premier league clubs in terms of wages, even newly promoted ones like Ipswich.
Reject bids please Mr Speakman. If he must go hold out for top dollar.

Aye, our only real data point is Ross and we had Southamptons pants down
