Is the Championship such a bad thing?

I don't mind being in the championship, the huge lose of revenue though with the club in this mess is a worry especially when it stops in 2 years time and we are still scratching about for freebies and loans to stay in it. Unless we get bought out we face some tough times.

Its not so bad in small bursts but the idea of not going back to the premiership, isn't the sort of ambition we should be looking at, this club belongs in the premier league the fan base certainly does. we will be back

The top league has always been our aim and should still be it's the place to be and always has.

We made way way more tv money last season finishing bottom than the mags made winning the league the gap is huge and will only grow.

I agree, I want to be up there and be competitive though...not 17th scraping by. I think the management of the club right now isn't suited for the top league. Needs a flame thrower...

agreed, or some sort of takeover

Interesting thread. Wonder if a few opinions have changed over the last 12-14 months about the league.

No one wants to finish 17th but it keeps you up.Some one just put up we got more money for getting relegated than the winners did in the championship. Short must be gutted ,if we had stayed up at 17th he would of getting more than winning this league, it's a business.

We're competitive in this league and we win plenty of games and score goals! There are some fantastic away days to look forward to, more than there are in the Premier League. In the past i would have gone to a game to see the likes of Dalglish or Bergkamp but not got the slightest bit of interest in the current crop, all these players flooding in for 40 million+ it's disgusting. The quality is pretty piss poor in the Championship but its fairly even and the fans are class.

Winning more games against shitter teams doesn't mean as much though. The challenge of every game in the prem means more. Just like everything in life, no point going easy mode.

Sunderland have not competed at the very highest level of flight football since the early 20th century apart from isolated periods like the mid 1930s. Its not the Premier that has ruined our chances of competing. Between 1958 & 1992 we never finished higher than 13th in Division One.

Not for me, been getting a bit bored of premiership for a couple of years. Didn't even watch much of it last year

I've enjoyed our championship spellsmore, so i'm looking forward to it tbh

Yes we are further away from real success and trophies than ever. I want to see us play the best teams in the land and we are an irrelevance outside the top flight. It is just a slog and a shit league to be in.
This season is just an exercise in ticking off new grounds for me.

But is playing shit football in 17th place, winning 7 or 8 games a season better?

No. I was sick to death of celebrating 17th place finishes with 9 wins all season, and being happy with a point against Swansea, Watford or Stoke. If you could offer me a like for like 8 seasons that Southampton had after their last relegation from the Top flight I'd bite your hand off. They are an excellent example of a properly run club that came back much stronger and have kicked on.

But they arent shitter teams though, taking a big following to leeds, Wednesday or Brum and coming away with the points after a good day out means more to me than going to Man City or Arsenal and hoping you don't get battered. That season we won one game has damaged me for life!!

From what I can gather, there are not the big away allocations I was expecting. The epic away days taking legendary numbers may well not happen.:(

I mean if you're not gonna compete in the top ten of the Prem...still have the Cup games. Is it just a prestige thing or is it a really big deal?
A proud club like sunderland belongs in the top division! To settle for anything less is defeatist !
