Is Sunday…

People are mocking the OP but Sunday is a pretty big game for us, a game against an elite club for a chance of qualifying for a competition we've never played in for over 50 years, these are the big pressure games we should welcome.

League Cup Final vs City was the last time we were one game from Europe
Interesting thing is worst League place is 12th if results didn’t go our way …If we win it’s 9th/8th or 7th…PL £££’s per place can really help us in the transfer market this summer.

The jump from 12th place to 7th place in the Premier League is worth roughly:

* About £13–14 million more in merit payments alone.

Using the latest estimated 2024/25–2025/26 distributions:

* 7th place ≈ £37.1M
* 12th place ≈ £23.8M

Difference:

* ~£13.3 million

And that’s BEFORE:

* extra TV facility fees
* Europa Conference/Europa League qualification money
* sponsorship bumps
* ticket/commercial increases

If 7th qualifies for Europe, the total financial swing versus 12th can realistically become:

* £20M–£35M+ overall

depending on:

* televised matches
* UEFA competition reached
* bonuses/commercial revenue.

For a club like Sunderland A.F.C., that kind of jump materially changes:

* transfer budget
* wage flexibility
* PSR/FFP room
* squad depth strategy.

The actual biggest game in our entire history was probably the FA Cup final in 1913.

We were top of the league with 3 games left. We won the title by 4 points with a far superior GD (average then I think).

Therefore we were playing in all likelihood win the double.

We need to show up on Sunday as if it were our biggest ever game. We need to bring the noise and add some ceremony like Coventry, West Ham or the Mags. The Chelsea kids need to feel the passion for us to succeed.

even last season the coventry game at home was bigger IMO

However, its a massive opportunity and this team will give its all

in recent history aye, or at least a close second to the playoffs last season (chucking all 3 games as a collective)

hope the atmosphere on Sunday is right up there like, the squad, backroom staff, owners all deserve to see the season out in style after a hell of a year. can’t wait to be visiting some moody Eastern European ground watching the red and white wizards next year……back a couple of yellas and at least one red for O9 along the way 😂

The play off final this time last year was a bigger game in terms of what it meant for the club going forward imo. Europe would be great undoubtedly, but if we miss out, we get another crack at it next year. Had we lost against Sheffield united we'd have lost a lot of what made us such a strong championsip side. Le Fee wouldn't have came back, Jobe was away, Ballard would have been sold to a premier league team etc. It could have took us another 2/3 years to build again for another promotion challenge imo.
