We struggled last year because Pardew tried to be too clever; systems and formations that were beyond his capacity, untraditional wide-players that he couldn't fit in (Marveaux, Ben Arfa) - add that to the Europa distraction and the sale of Ba and it was a disaster.

He's gone back to a simple 4-4-2 lately, thrown a couple of work horses on the wings, and voila, we're doing well again. He's a one trick pony, but thankfully the trick has become relatively effective at this level. We'll run into problems again when he tries to do things outside of his limits; ie. trying to bring the likes of Ben Arfa back in.

Completely agree. Pardew used it as a ready made excuse and it effected the players' mentality. Thus, regardless of whether it should have been, it was a distraction.

Not so long ago it was your team stuck in the championship/Division 1 , while we were mid-table premier league.
Difference being - we actually won silverware and played in europe.
