Central Defender
Had a ride over the coast today to try some long exposure shots.
The combination of rain and sea spray made it impossible.
Even Photoshop couldnt get rid.

You can easily take shots under an umbrella.

Spray is more of a problem of course. It'll give a soft focus effect. Try wiping the lens during shot with a black cloth, but you'll have to have a very sturdy tripod position and head

I've tried all that.
Too windy for a brolly.
Not too keen on wiping the lens as it may alter the focus.
Lens hood out of the question because of square filters.

I'll just have to wait for better weather.

it wont always be too windy for a brolly though.

To be fair, it prolly will in the North East ;)

You could wipe a square filter instead of the lens then....

What type of filter were you using then mate?

I've bought a cheap set of ND filters...i think there's a 2, 4 and 8 in the packet...just the typical screw in's for my 58mm Canon lens - want to give these type of shots a go...

I've got a tripod, camera, lens, filters, remote shutter cable etc - anything I'm missing?
Any advice on settings?

Image looks great to me too - very atmospheric.

One thing I'd be very concerned about is getting sea spray on your camera. Salty water is very damaging to cameras. Make sure you clean thoroughly afterwards if any part of the camera has come into contact with it.

Mine are Cokin P series filters but I'm looking for a 10stop ND filter.
Good ones aren't cheap.
The filter I used for the shot above was a home made effort.Just for fun.
Clear welding lens's which happen to be exactly the same width as a Cokin Filter, and so fit the holder. Covered with grey film obtained from Auto Tint windscreens. Got to be put on without getting any air bubbles.
Welding lens 40p, plastic film free. Don't come any cheaper than that.
Obviously not at the forefront of technology.
Being a complete novice I just set to Bulb mode at f22, hold the shutter open and hope for the best at different shutter speeds.

welding glass are great for daytime stuff, use one every now n then, get some great results from them, best to use them when there is a bit cloud movement too

Great - thanks mate - will give it a go :)

Hi Clyde.

Ive looked at the Hoya but I'm wanting a filter that fits into a Cokin holder.
With lens diameters of 55mm,58mm, 72mm I want something that fits all.
I've read that the Cokin 10stop ND gives a pink cast so I'm a bit doubtfull about buying.
I was a welder for 50 years and if I remember rightly everything looks green.
So you've obviously done a good job converting to B and W.

I actually had, but chose not to mention it.

How can you expect to be taken seriously with such wilfull disregard to the national horizontalist party?

When we achieve full power you'll be in bother :)

What do we want?

When do we want it?

All the time, basically.
