Irish playing for England

Not sure if this has been discussed here before, but with Boyd Rankin being the latest what are peoples views on the Irish playing for England?

It's a different scenario in my eyes to the likes the Trott and Pietersen, who have never represented SA at full international level. Seems to be a case of play well for Ireland and you will get promoted to England so you can play top level cricket internationally.

It's easy to forget that the "England" cricket team is actually the "England & Wales" and have been well served in past by the likes of Croft & Jones. Should the England cricket team become the Britain & Ireland cricket team, a bit like the Lions in the Rugby?

I doubt this would ever happen though, and personally I look forward to the day Ireland are promoted to Test level, sure they might not have 5-0 series wins over the Aussies but reckon they would give Zimbabwe & Bangladesh a good run for their money.
 

If they can go one way can they not go back the other way when their best international days are behind them? Pass on a bit of their experience from here to the younger Irish lads?

Could be a boost to their development and would mean they don't need to come here to play top level international cricket.

Ed Joyce did. Played for England in the 2007 world cup, then later went back to playing for Ireland once England stopped picking him
 
I agree with the worm. If they've picked their alliance by playing for Ireland then that's who they should stick with.

I think it's ridiculous at the moment and I'd like to see Ireland make a stand and say 'move to England (where you might get a few games before the selectors start rubbing their thighs over some other county plodder) and you won't be coming back.

England might as well name themselves ROW XI for me.
 
Just make Ireland a test nation and be done with it. They have more of a right to be a test nation than Zimbabwe or Bangladesh IMHO.
 
We've been doing it for years, going back to D'Oliveria and Lamb.
The aussies have started now fastracking a passport for that pakistani bowler.
 
Teams do it, because they can get away with it. The ICC needs to tighten it up and set things along the lines as football for qualifiying for a country.

Although TBH, I'd get back to English only, never mind the Welsh. I know it's the England and Wales Cricket Board but the team is England, no-one else.

Agreed.

It embarrasses me that we rely on overseas players. Eoin Morgan for example is clearly Irish, Ireland has a team so he should play for them. Same goes for Trott, Dernbach, Pietersen etc.

So Pietersen, Compton, Prior etc would still be fine to play for England because of English parents.

Also, I find it strange that there is barely any mention on here of Ben Stokes whenever these threads come up.
 
What is English anymore?

Society has changed. Families move all the time.

And where you have a limited number of test nations, it almost seems unfair to deny those with talent to earn money playing cricket (it's not like football where, IPL apart, you can make much cash without internationals)

It needs to be more fluid than place of birth but not much more. For example, Ted Dexter was born in Milan but clearly is English.

However, people like Morgan, Trott and KP grew up considering themselves (and deep down, probably still consider themselves) as a nationality other than English. Having them play for us is too much of a stretch IMO.

What about Scotland? Don't forget Mike Denness. Croft said he considered he was playing for Wales when with Glamorgan, and the Lions when with England.
