Investment in the stadium

Anyone think it will happen anytime soon?

Literally falling apart in places and on the approach to the ground
The approach to the ground should improve with the Riverside Development. However, the ground needs serious investment. The concourses are far too narrow and unsafe. The amenities resemble that of fairground.

the SOL will eventually need to be modernised, but as I posted on the first page, nothing will happen until we know if we have 2028 games.

If we do, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see millions invested into the stadium

It's a genuine point the op makes mind.... There's been a leak in the North Stand roof for a years now. The hot water has been off in the North Stand loos for god knows how long. Various bulbs on the floodlights have been out for 2 seasons. The tanoy system is ropey at best. The steel work at the back of the east stand is starting to rust and the paint peeling off. It's scruffy inside and out.
It's not going to fall down, but needs a lot of care and attention which to be fair should be done as a matter of course.

Is any part actually falling apart?

Approach to the ground is private land now and sold off by the council isnt it?
I'm not sure what the problem is, but if you use the toilets at half time there is always smoke coming out the top of the stalls.
Could maybe put a sprinkler above to cover whatever is the problem.

A few non removable and non combustible litter bins around the outside of the ground.

I just think that for as long the small things, like the ones you mentioned, aren't addressed the more serious problems will mount up. The stadium is 25 years old. 1/4 of the lifespan of RP and needs improvement in a hell of a lot of areas.

I hate going to away grounds that are on out of town Identikit retail parks with nandos and Starbucks. Fuck that. I like our ground that way it is, must be class for away fans, proper pubs in all directions, 5 mins walk to the town centre, few scrap yards and back lanes to navigate .
Roker Park was not a 5 minute walk from Park Lane Bus Station. Never minded walking to the ground with the match to look forward to. However, win, lose or draw, the walk back was a pain in the arse.

We'll not get the 2028 Euros at the stadium. Of the grounds, as Villa Park's extension is confirmed already, only Belfast is smaller capacity than the Stadium of Light, and Belfast has to be used as Northern Ireland is a co-host and that's their only venue.

Other grounds mention possible or proposed extensions, but no notes of that sort on Sunderland, which - I'm guessing - means they won't be taking any expansion into account and consider 49000 as our capacity.

On that alone, there's no way it'll make the final 10 host stadia, and that's before you take transport infrastructure and hotel capacity into account.

Hot water in bogs seems to have gone off everywhere in the last few years, I dont think may people pay for it anymore. Its horrible trying to wash yours and your kids' hands when the water is totally freezing.

As for improvements, I wonder if anyone has ever looked into building things attached to the outside of the stadium. Like prefab buildings to serve as bars, and then turn the current bars into other stuff to remove the bottle necks in both areas?
A decent PA system would be nice..
Makes me laugh when people say this about the SOL. Obviously people don't remember the PA at Roker Park.

And hardly anyone will remember hearing national anthems played on it

As a scout for the British Olympic walking team, you’re just the sort of world-class talent we need. Meet for a trial at Park Lane at 2.55 on Saturday before the Stoke game.

It doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be fit for purpose though. All you have described there is everything outside of the ground.

It’s our home, it should be as good as we can reasonably make it (financially speaking)
People are just soft man, nowt wrong with it. It's football ground not the metro centre.
I mean, where to start

What's funny about wanting a PA system that doesn't sound shit, like the current one does. I remember Roker Parks tannoy system all to well. :)

I wouldn’t rule us out yet as I know our previous bid for 2018 was brilliantly well received, but the club have a lot of work to do.
