Thoughts?

Couldn't have been a better time to play India at home.

Maybe i'm a little out of touch but I can't believe how close Sri Lanka are behind us given some of the pastings i've noticed they've had recently? Although, our winter tours...

You've answered your question

This is only England's second series defeat in new Zealand all time.

Sri Lanka beat Pakistan in the UAE and Bangladesh in Bangladesh in the last six months.

We've been pasted by Australia and lost to NZ for the first time in 25 years.

We have got big problems with our batting, our main bowlers are approaching retirement and the next generation of players just took a hammering from West Indies A. We have got big problems with our test set up and the ECB are fiddling while Rome burns.

5th flatters us. If Bayliss stays we'll be 7th by the end of the year after losing to Pakistan, India (yes I do think they'll beat us on current form, they did alright in SA)and SL.

I wonder how long it would take to recruit and get a new coach in post. I'd think at least 3 months. Then you'd want to give them some time working with the squd before they faced their first game - so perhaps there's not enough time until after the India series.

Presumably the captain will be part of the one day series in June.

I think Bayliss was due to leave in September anyway, I doubt he can really go any sooner.

Bayliss leaves after the World Cup in 2019, mate.

Probably not but didn't Moores go at a similar time, possibly even later in the year, after the West Indies tour just before they brought Bayliss in?

Just watching the "Debate" as it's called these days. Bob v FTECB selector Fraser. Should be interesting!

Moores left after the 'conflict' with KP, this is not quite at that stage. And Bayliss was appointed but didn't arrive until after the New Zealand series the following summer and it was during that series that England progress under the temporary control of Farbrace.

Which I suppose there is an argument that Bayliss could go but Farbrace could take over as temporary couch - but what would be the point, he's a part of the failing regime.

Fair point but the rest of what I said is fair I think. I don't see how there's time for him to go as Test coach for this coming season.
Oh I absolutely agree, mate. For me, Bayliss should leave red ball cricket alone, he clearly has no real interest or skill in it.

Also, on the point of Bayliss, and this is no way an attempt to have a pop at him, but even in white ball cricket, it was Farbrace that started the revolution with the NZ series in 2015 (?). We already had the players to play how we do in pyjama cricket, it was just a case of them being allowed to take the shackles off.

How was it? I love having a laugh at Willis

Can you call 2 test matches a series?
In the context it was said, half of England's tours of NZ have been 1 or 2 tests and rarely more than 3. It is disappointing but can't expect much more after an Ashes series. Poor planning but that is just Cricket. Pakistan 2 tests and India 5 is another farce.

There is another 2 test series against NZ coming up next year. Seems that's the way now, they get bundled with OZ or SA and get the short straw. I'd Love to see NZ or Pak over here for a 4 test series. The Ashes is the Ashes but a tour/summer should be 3 & 4 with less One Day shite

Entertaining as expected. Got quite tetchy at times with Fraser trying desperately to put a positive spin on the winter and Charles and Bob taking every attempt to wind him up with questions like: If England were to tour Australia now with Australia in their current state do you think they'd win? And did you really think the squad you selected had a chance of winning the Ashes, as they departed from Heathrow back in October?

A disgruntled "Yes of course" was the answer to both

Aye, you could see Bumrah causing us problems. He's better than the pie-chuckers they brought last time. Kumar is probably one of the world's best proponents of conventional swing and caused us all sorts of problems in 2014. He's also upped his pace from military medium to proper fast medium. Pandya is a much better all-rounder than Stuart Binny.

I still think we'll beat them, as they're so awful against the moving ball, but it could be close.

Pakistan have traditionally been a bogey team for us.

I don't know why the ECB can't see what all the fans can: Bayliss is a white ball specialist and we need to appoint a separate red ball coach.

If they had any sense, they'd have held discussions already. Given the shocking Ashes performance and his being due to leave after the World Cup anyway, he could hardly complain.
