Fascinating Story of a Hawker Hurricane stolen by a Czech pilot and ending up with the Germans.
Fascinating Story of a Hawker Hurricane stolen by a Czech pilot and ending up with the Germans.
Think it was originally at the bottom of Strawberry Bank and was moved to its present location? Probably well before WW2 like.Lived in Hill View Gdns just off Bainbridge Road. Was the Rosedene a pub back then? He seems the sort to get in there.
Its in the comments section.Cheers for that mate.I missed where they say it was from Usworth airport though?
Least the bassas only come over to steal our jobs these days
Haway man 55 OTU trained a load of Czech RAF pilots at Usworth who died protecting this region and got buried at Castletown. Bit respect is owed.
Castletown Cemetery also has war graves of O.T.U. pilots from America, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Poland and Uganda.
I used to live in that street in Castletown that you can see in the background on the war graves picture on your first link. One of the graves is this Polish ace:
12.08.1941 No. 55 O.T.U. Hurricane I V7742 Sgt. Karubin DFM
Battle of Britain London Monument - Sgt. S Karubin
