Hume Hybrid Role

To be honest I think people are just making up this hybrid role stuff.

The last couple of games he's just played right wing. Its not unusual for your right winger to sometimes find himself in the middle or in the right back position, it doesn't make it a "hybrid role".

He was playing a hybrid role earlier in the season when with the ball he played central midfield then dropped into right back without, it that hasn't been the case for a while.

It's simply wild selecting him on the wing with two £20m wingers on the bench.

Hume had a shocker today but I also think that sometimes his limitations are masked when we have a good result. He slips under the radar a bit when we play well but he's often caught in possession, loses the ball cheaply, struggles with simple passes which breaks down our forward play. I love his tenacity and his aggression but I think he's one of the weakest links in our side.

Sadly the defeat today is totally on RLB, in fairness the first time he has got it massively wrong.

Gertruida for Xhaka was the obvious pick, Hume was hung out to dry, add to that Mayenda and Mundle being way out of their depth, and Reinildo having a real off day (albeit against Bowen) and we were handicapped from the start. At least he had the balls to make the necessary changes at HT, we were obviously better second half.

I thought it was a good cameo from Diarra, who added pace and athleticism and hopefully that was a good learning experience for RLB - Mayenda, Mundle currently not up to prem standards. If Xhaka is fit for next week he'll be back in, if not Gertruida, plus Diarra, Sadiki and ELF in the middle, Brobbey plus ANO (not Mayenda, Mundle or Adingra) - probably Wilson? - up top.

Maybe Cirkin did enough to keep his place?

The obvious choice when missing Xhaka is Geertruida & sidiki, just like when missing Sidiki it was Xhaka & Geertruida.....but maybe Geertruida has a knock? I thought Diarra did well 2nd half and hopefully he can become an important player for us now fit. No need to play Hume in centre mid with Geertruida, Sidiki & Diarra fit

It’s wild playing him where we did today. He’s so limited it’s untrue. Bang average full back.

Struggling to recall an individual performance as bad as that today. I don’t think a single pass found a Sunderland player. He missed a golden chance to equalise with a free header at the back post and then gave away a ridiculous penalty hanging his leg out nowhere near the ball.

Should’ve been hooked after 20 minutes.

Gave the ball away cheaply as fook in midfield when he had easy options to deploy it anarl, that was before the pen

Hume should have a hatful of goals on his sunderland cv the chances he hasnt put away...the lad can tackle and defend, that's his game....today highlighted his limit

He was praised for it not too long ago, as was Le Bris for the tactical flexibility.

I don't think Hume playing a hybrid role is a point blank 'must stop'. It's served us well at times. But where it hasn't really worked is when we've only had two midfielders in there. He looked lost trying to play two unnatural roles when we were already light in there. Compared with last week when him doing that allowed us to keep 3 in midfield whilst Le Fee got forward.

He’s a decent defender but he’s not at the same level as his teammates on the ball. Poor in front of goal too and loads of our chances falling to a player who is essentially a defensive right back

Giving him more responsibility in the area of his weakness seems nuts to me but then what do I know.

Geertruida on the other hand as a player who has played a lot of football at right back and centre midfield seems perfect for it if he’s going to play that way. Really don’t understand it

I can understand playing him in a deeper midfield role against the likes of Man City but I don't think he's good enough to play further forward, today highlighted he struggles on the ball to make those forward passes or create chances. We wouldn't create much even in the championship if Hume and Mundle were playing out wide.

Assuming Xhaka's still injured:

......................Roefs......................
Mukiele.Ballard Alderete Reinildo
.......Geertruida........Sadiki...........
Diarra............Le Fee...........Talbi
.....................Brobbey..................

Subs:
Patterson
Hume O'9 Cirkin
Adingra Rigg Mundle
Mayenda Isidor

See I didn't start this thread to bash at Hume as I feel, even with his limitations, we still play well with him in the team most weeks. Obviously today was a massive exception, but he seems to be asked to play a different role week in and week out and thats probably why we arent getting the consistency from like we are from others.

I was bashing Hume a lot at the start of last season saying he was underperforming compared to some in the team when we started the season well, but weirdly enough as our level dropped off a bit as a team, he started putting in better performances towards the back end of the season. To me, thats because he had a consistent role at RB and played it well.

For him now, Mukiele is in at RB as he is just better than him and thats the way the cookie crumbles.

We should stop with the putting round pegs in square holes and play players where they are suited.

I’ve seen him score some decent goals at Championship level which makes it all the more puzzling. He’s missed several good
chances in the last half dozen or so games.

He’s our back up full back.

He’s served us well but not at the standard we now require as first choice.
