How fast is fast?

Noticing that Mitchell Johnson bowling 90mph on average and upto 93mph is described as (lfm) left, fast medium. I would describe that as (faf) fast as fuck.

I notice the likes of Anderson, Broad etc are all (rfm) and the likes of Collingwood used to be (rm). Also to confuse things further I have noticed a few described as (rmf) rather than (rfm) I guess this is for those bowling around 80mph or so!

Anyway if Mitchell Johnson bowling 93mph isn't a fast bowler who is? Steyn maybe?
 

Seems to be a lack of genuine fast bowlers these days. WIs in the 70s & 80s had them in abundance. Aussies in the 80s and 90s had plenty. Pakistan had their fair share. Now there only seems to be Dale Steyn. The rest are quick but not what you would class as really fast on a consistent basis.

you have to ask yourself why you'd want to be a fast bowler seeing the broken bodies and trail of injury ravaged careers that follow...
 
Regularlly above 88mph - Fast
83-88mph- Fast Medium
78-83mph- Medium Fast
Owt below 78mph - Medium

Imho

Not many england players have ever been able to be classed as express pace bowlers... Maybe Harmy & Malcolm, Gough on his day could hit 90mph...

Ignore the speed gun for starters, it's just a guide.

The thing to look for is when good batsmen just can't get into position to play their shots, or occasionally when the keeper moves back a yard or two. The gun doesn't always pick speed up, nothing is perfect. A good example of this was during the fourth day of the fourth test at Chester -le- Street. Broard was really bowling sharpish in good light. The batsmen were getting beat by pace almost every ball, and Prior moved himself and the slips back a couple of yards, which I noticed from my spot at about point to the right handers. Some of these balls were still flashed up on the screen as being at the same speed as most other bowling in the match. It wasn't, it was significantly quicker, and is what made it an " I was there " moment.
 
Anything consistently above 92mph is a proper quick.

Bob Willis regularly hit 90mph

Fastest England bowler of all time is Frank Tyson. He was recorded at 89mph bowling in three jumpers with a short run-up, for an early speed gun test at the University of Auckland. His average speed was probably well over 90.

Jeff Thomson is the fastest bowler of all time, clocked at 99.8mph by a speed gun at the WACA.

Shoaib is incredible. I saw a spell at the Riverside against Somerset where he got 4 wickets in quick succession all bowled I think. You just couldn't pick up the ball from the side, his arm came over the stumps went flying and the bat came down late.
A bit of an arsehole by all accounts but a wonderful player to watch in full flow.

I always thought someone was quick from a personal perspective when I went out to bat with no intention of ever getting forward, not running quick to get on strike and not being fussed if I got out as long as my health was still in tact. Chris drum ex kiwi was quickest I faced 7 over duck

For me that would be about 70mph

The majority of Thommo's balls were never measured. Given the ones that were are a gnat's fart off Shoaib's record I am inclined to believe he threw one down considerably faster in his career.
