The highest successful run chase in Tests wasn't that long ago - it was West Indies v Australia in Antigua back in 2003. Set 418 to win, the West Indies scored 418/7 in 129 overs to win the Test. Sarwan and Chanderpaul both scored centuries.

The highest successful run chase I've found in first class cricket was in Hyderabad in 2010. In the Duleep Trophy final, South Zone won the toss and chose to bat first. South Zone scored 400 (Dinesh Karthik scored 183 and Irfan Pathan took five for 100), to which the West Zone replied with 251 (Yusuf Pathan scored 108 and Chandrasekharan Ganapathy took five for 75). In their second innings, the South Zone declared at 386 for nine, with a second century from Dinesh Karthik (150); Dhawal Kulkarni took five for 58. Set 536 to win, West Zone reached 541 for seven with a century from Chirag Pathak (130) and a second hundred from Yusuf Pathan (210*). The match was won by West Zone by three wickets.

The highest in the county championship seems to be Middlesex v Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge in 1925. The game began with two low-scoring innings. Notts won the toss and batted first, collapsing from 107-3 to 167 all out, 78 coming from the bat of WRD Payton and 20 from extras. Middlesex lost wickets regularly in reply, limping to 127. I'm guessing that the sun came out after that because Notts declared their second innings on 461-9, Payton finishing with 126 not out.

Set 502 to win, Middlesex must've looked dead and buried at 66-4. Hendren and Bruce put on 154 for the fifth wicket but the sixth fell with 231 on the board. Incredibly, they didn't lose another wicket as a partnership of 271* for the seventh wicket saw them home to 502-6.

I can think of at least 2 instances where teams have scored more than this in the 4th innings, but not won the match.

and the NZ test in 1973.

Also England scored 645/5 in the 4th innings needing about another 50 to win, in South Africa, but had to leave to catch the boat home. :lol:

In internationals i think the record belongs to Afghanistan when they chased 400 to beat Scotland IIRC.

Another example of why Test Cricket is the greatest sport in the world.

We've been playing for a week and a half, and we're within about an hour of victory and..... Sorry chaps, must dash, we'll call it a draw.
