Seven years between your relegations, that took me by surprise I must admit, feels like less. Mind, you trash that link completely if a gap of a mere 3.6 Million minutes in a sequence prevents you being a yoyo club - we've sat still for 5.8 million minutes now - so thanks for confirming we certainly aren't one - cheers.

Just to be clear, by refuting the claim Newcastle United are a yoyo-club, I wasn't implying that Sunderland are one now. That link was just an unbiased clarification of my position.

You aren't now a yoyo club, but to be fair there was a period you could have been described as one. A 12 year span (95-07) where you saw 3 relegations and 4 promotions. But then, the following 10 years of stability in the top flight has let you shrug that off.

It's clear the only reason Benitez stayed at Newcastle was because he didn't want to leave his family in the UK again and he had no better offers in the UK.

Of course the "he loves the fans and the club" line was swallowed up, but there's not a hope in hell he would have stayed if he had a Premier League offer last summer.

It would be like us declaring Defoe must be shit because he's signed for Sunderland and Sunderland are shit. When, objectively, Defoe is a leading goal scorer in the Premier League. The dismissal of Benitez's trophy wins is churlish.



Say it quietly, but 11 players who should win you promotion, for £55m isn't bad business at all.

Pickford, Kone and a few others could fund the kind of overhaul Sunderland need to push for automatic promotion at the first time of asking. Say you get £50m for JP, LK, DN + one or two others; you could buy 3 players for around £10m, and 4 players for around £5m. 7 new players who the new manager can use as a core, with squad players from your youth team and existing squad.

It's possible to think Benitez is a good manager and also think he has not done a good job at your spot. He's been pretty average for you, taking you down after failing to beat any of your relegation rivals, then spending a fortune to build a promotion team. Long-term I think he will prove a decent manager for you but the way some go on with 'Rafalution' and that, predicting record points totals and unbeaten runs all season, you'd think he was the second coming.

It's all been argued on here before as I'm sure you're well aware. I am pretty sure that we will not agree as to who was all was not to blame for your relegation.

However, from an outsider looking in and it would appear to me that when Rafa Took over there was plenty of time, points and ability in your squad to have preserved your Premier League status.

FWIW I think that he is a decent manager but his infallible status amongst a lot of Newcastle support is naive and to be honest embarrassing.

Agree with that, those that won't dare criticise him and shout down anyone that does are the worst. He's made a few errors this season and there's games we should have done better in but we're still top so you can't criticise too much

Everton - Koeman is doing well and I'd expect him to stay there a while, plus Everton fans aren't massive fans of Rafa since that quote.
Liverpool - Klopp's going nowhere and I'd be surprised if Rafa wanted to go back
Man Utd - Mourinho's going nowhere this summer and they can get pretty much whoever they like
Man City - Guardiola might be under a lot of pressure, but they'd want a higher profile man than Rafa
Spurs - I'd be surprised if Pochettino left and even if he does they'll just go and nab the next big name; Gourvennec, Tuchel or whomever

The way that some go on is ridiculous, but they're not the majority, they're not even a large minority. Just like there's some in your support who still won't criticise Moyes, and there are some who only criticise Moyes. Know-nowts in shouting loudly shocker.

Benitez took over a broken side and managed 1.3 PpG in his final 10 games, most other fans know that he did an ok job (with some mistakes) and that ok job would have kept us up in other seasons. Bear in mind of all the miracle survivals on Wearside, only Advocaat managed a better PpG than Benitez did. Since relegation, he's overhauled a squad, brought in an entire team (1GK, 4D, 4M, 2S) while still making a £30m profit, turned a f***ing shambles into a league leading side with the most wins, the best attack and best defence in the league.

He's at times too pragmatic in home games, at times too slow in making substitutions and puts too much faith in average players (Anita, Colback) because they follow his instructions better than others (Mbemba).

The Newcastle fans I know, the ones on here and the ones on other boards see his faults, but see he's a very good manager that we're lucky to have.

Long term (if he stays) I think he'll be a cracking manager for us and, almost as importantly, he'll get loads of support from a crowd unfamiliar with actually liking the manager.

Maybe, but he's stated quite categorically that he wanted to stay in England near his family. I'd be surprised if he changed his mind any time soon.
