Heads should roll

I’m a cricket fanatic, student of the game, played a bit, and know we have sent some poor teams to Australia. But this is by far the most shambolic performance I’ve seen from an England team in Australia. Preparation non existent. Batting awful. How can we expect to do anything? What an absolute disgrace, I expect resignations or sackings. This just should not happen. Worse than pathetic.

Too make matters worse against a very mediocre Aussie team . Totally agree with your comments.

Responsibility lays squarely with the ECB who have prioritised white ball cricket, some players are simply not good enough lead by a coach who needs to go, need someone with the spine to give the underperforming players a boot up the arse occasionally.

Clear out needed! Keep Root ( not as Capt), Stokes, Robinson and Wood! The rest can f**k off, including the coaching staff.
Rob Key talking a lot of sense on SSN this morning.

It's ridiculous that the ECB have been allowed to fuck the red ball game to the extent they have without anyone holding them to account. It's a pathetic excuse for them to say we couldn't improve our white ball team without sacrificing the red ball game when Australia have just won their 6th(?) white ball world cup while maintaining a strong test team.

There's room for both formats, we just need to find a balance across the whole summer. And scrap the 16.4.

Was watching some highlights from another recent ridiculous short format tournament this morning (Abu Dhabi T10). 26 English players chasing the dollar in another cheap TV schedule filler.

Yes,you've probably put your finger on one of the problems. In past years those same players would have been honing their red ball skills during the winter by playing high level club cricket in Australia or S. Africa.

This is the other side of it, you can't blame the players for taking the opportunity to earn some easy money, it's a short career and it's understandable that they want to make the most of it while they can.

Surely it's not beyond the realms of reality for the ECB, Cricket Australia, Cricket South Africa and even the BCCI to work together to safeguard the long forms of the game, it's not like they don't have a financial interest in it. If young promising cricketers were given the opportunities and financial incentives to play first class cricket around the world, we'll see higher standards in all forms of the game. Existing and new fans will be drawn in and everyone benefits.

Being a good red ball cricketer is never going to turn players into bad white ball cricketers, but too much focus the other way will reduce red ball standards.

Another problem is the ICC is probably weaker than the cricketing authorities in at least three of those test playing nations you've listed. I think the WI have just about given up on test cricket with the exception of the England series cos it's a good moneyspinner for them.

Absolutely spot on this.

Great post.

Sadly this is true, though I'm not sure the ICC are fussed either, as the tournaments they sanction are also big money spinners.

It's sad to see how the test game has declined in the West Indies, particularly as they have a decent test team.

I honestly believe that if the main test cricket boards could come up with something similar to what I suggested above, it would benefit test cricket as a whole, without impacting negatively on the white ball game, apart from perhaps the T10 and 16.4 stuff, which really wouldn't be missed.

The captain one is a big problem for me, I don’t think root is a good captain. Problem is that him and stokes are only ones who are guaranteed a place. I would not give job to stokes given his recent struggles. Not sure what the answer is but we may need to give the captaincy to a younger player and stick with him (bit like smith and South Africa) I have no idea who this should be though
agree about getting Strauss back involved. I would try and get ponting in for the coach job, or sangakkara (he always comes across good on sky coaching sessions etc)
