difficult when to know when to put young players into test cricket, 2 arguments,

1 is that its too early to expose them, another is that a lot of the bst players get in the test team early and develop while playing it, Cook, Root etc

Lammonby and Crawley been poor this year but clearly great prospects

selection isn't an easy thing

Lammonby would probably benefit from being on a Lions tour. Dropping him in the test team when he's not in good form could destroy his confidence.

I would like us to give one or two new players a chance this summer tho, too much shuffling the central contracts pack.

Aye agree on Lammonby, too soon for me

Personally, I think we were onto something good before the turning pitches came in India


Sibley, Crawley and Pope are 3 good young players, have had some great moments and some tough moments but think they are worth investing in. We need them to stand up and deliver against India and Oz though, as runs is all that matters.


I'd argue that only really Burns is in doubt, considering Root and Stokes make up top 6, with Buttler at 7.

Lawrence and Pope competing for the same spot IMO currently.

I dont like the Burns/Sibley combinaton, I thought we looked much better in South Africa with Crwley and Sibley who looked a good match, although I'd keep him 3

Just think we need an authodox player opening with Sibley, not someone who has so many moving parts.

But we have a new selector in charge, and the young batsmen were very much Ed Smith picks I reckon. Be interesting to see

Be interested to see what side is selected against New Zealand. Stokes injured and likely to be without (assuming IPL continues) Moeen, Curran or Woakes so we don’t really have anyone for the all rounder role. Buttler potentially be missing as well but he has an obvious replacement.

As the hundred has gone too far as you have alluded too, however saying that what would I rather watch top class cricketers playing attacking shots as opposed to watching Hameed taking all day to score runs, straight forward choice imo

Same for Azad at Leicestershire who is averaging 45s in first class and should be on the selector's radar.

I'd leave Hameed for a summer tbh. Maybe if its going great guns and there's a need for him, you could bring him in for the India series, but Idk. Have to be gentle with his confidence and not sure, unless he's on fire and head in good place, that I'd be thinking of him with an Ashes winter in mind.

There is no f***ing way the IPL can continue for much longer, so expect we might see all three. Would definitely be starting Moeen and Woakes, whereas Curran seems obvious call up in place of injured Stokes.

Moeen does not deserve to play over Leach and there’s no way we’re playing two spinners against NZ

Each to their own, but in my opinion, he looked more threatening in one game than the other two did the entire f***ing series in the winter.

I would also make an argument that he has to come good on his batting at some point and that England have a real problem with the tail, looking towards the winter.

We know what the bowling attack, if all fit and firing, is going to be in Brisbane: Archer, Anderson, Broad and Stokes. Throw Leach in to that mix and we could be in trouble.

I'm not saying Ali is an automatic pick over Leach, but I would be looking to give him some games this summer just to see where he's at, because at his best he walks in ahead of Leach, for batting and bowling reasons. Stokes being out would seem to present the best opportunity for that, because you can make it about stacking the all-rounders in to lengthen the tail. If it works, great. If not, Leach can come back in for India.

He did play pretty well, comparatively, with bat and ball in the game he played imo. Shame he got Covid early on.

Meh. He may be better on his day, but his day is one day in three, he's 33 and seemingly not that arsed about red ball cricket. He would be one of my first picks for the white ball team, but we need to be looking to the future for the test team and that would be Bess.

No disrespect intended as seems a canny lad but if Bess is what we looking at we in big trouble in the spinning department imo

If age is the criteria I think I'd prefer a 33 y.o. spinner to a 23 y. o. But with Ali it has really been all about his batting. He had to learn to spin well after he started to be picking in the Test team and for me his batting is his main talent even 8f he hadnt got scores for quite a while.

Not convinced by Bess at all. Still needs a season or two ripening in country cricket imo.

Still fancy Virdi long-term, but its hard to assess the first class evidence given the total lack of pitch help quality young spinners get.

England like spinners who can hold down an end and bat or they tend to be passengers in the first innings. Amar Virdi makes Monty Panesar look like a decent batsman. Moeen can bat but not hold down an end. Leach, despite his heroics at Headingley and Lords, is a number 11. They settled on Bess as he was useful at both and 'one for the future. His performances in South Africa were outstanding. Unfortunately he has struggled for consistency and lost his line and length in India but you don't just chuck a young player like that on the scrap heap.

Everyone was fapping themselves about Critchley before we played Derbyshire and he served up some absolute buffet stuff to Bedingham on an unsympathetic wicket. Being able to keep things tight on unfriendly wickets is, unfortunately, part of an England spinner's remit.
