We also have the luxury of batting Prior at 7, and his average for a keeper is exceptional.

Sorry if theb cricket geekths.

I cannot remember an England batting line-up that is that strong.

Swann at 10 and yet in the past would have batted 8 and maybe even 7.

To be honest they need to be with Cook and Strauss looking out of form. Cook just in this series like.

Swann is probably good enough to be a test number 7 if it came down to it.

The nightwatchman is number 11 in this team. Unreal batting line up and to see a 60+ from our no.9 and then a 90 from our no.8 is quality.

If he had to be then probably yes.

Extraordinary given that 5 years ago, 8-11 would be:

Giles - 20.89 (Test batting average)
Hoggard - (07.27)
Harmison - (11.79)
Jones - (15.76)

Today, 8-11 was:

Bresnan - (32.80)
Broad - (27.88)
Swann - (24.03)
Anderson - (11.74)

5 years ago Warne, Kumble, Pollockk, Mcragth would have meant our tails batting average would have been the same as what the top lots was

Fair enough but you've got to admit the quality of batting now is a lot better now than back then, even in First Class cricket.

Giles (First Class average - 26.33)
Hoggard - (9.26) (Given he was never a run scorer but an end holder)
Harmison - (9.80)
Jones - (12.14)

Bresnan - (27.88)
Broad - (25.13)
Swann - (26.25)
Anderson - (10.04)

Duncan Fletcher installed in our lot how to bat lower down the order. Over the last 3 years or so you will have seen England batting averages have creeped up from the low 40s to the high 40s in the main as a result of runs being easier to come by.

Warne, Lee and Gillespie were very decent as well.

ours are better imo but that was a class rearguard too no doubt about it

Warne in particular was very vexing. Always looked like a walking wicket and then all of a sudden he would be on 40 odd and the Aussies would be just about saved

aye scored quickly enough to take a game away from the opposition, shocked he never got a test 100

99 didnt he? No justice that he got out on 99 and Gillespie managed a double ton

Giles, Gough and Caddick all had batting ability as well but I think the bowlers around back then could dismiss the tail more effectively. Warne, Donald, McGrath, Courtney and Curtley, Wasim and Waqar were deadly. Think Id definitely prefer batting as a tail ender now

if this lad ever gets a test 50

you know test cricket has gone to shite!

a genuine number 12

Quality batting stats. If you got rid of his not outs he averages 1.24 per innings

if he ever even gets to twenty someone should have their hands cut off
