On the Tuffers and Vaughan podcast - talking about why we're so bad at T20.

Personally feel like I'd like to punch the c*nt, on about how Test cricket is dead everywhere except here. Basically, get the feeling he's just a patronising twat who thinks the world revolves around the IPL.

So, thoughts lads? Is he right? Test Cricket is dying and T20 is the future? He more or less said as much. "T20 is now THE game" he said, or summit like that. Well not for me. If T20 is THE game then I don't want owt to do with the fucker.

He also mentions about the possibility of England changing our season to suit the IPL. f***ing prick. He's a nobody anyway. Pompous twat.

Remember when him and others were running around bragging that the IPL was going to take Cricket into China and The US? Everyone is still waiting for it to happen and because of that he's getting defensive and comments like those are a direct result of it. Would love to ask him if t20 is THE game then why have the last few T20 world cups done crap TV numbers and IPL crowds have been falling for years?
 
Sadly I think test cricket has pretty much died in the Asian countries, well maybe not died, but at least taken a back seat to the T20 bang. It clearly still thrives here, and Australia and South Africa seem to sell plenty tickets, for the bigger series anyway.

The issue for me is the T20 crowd that has been attracted to the game, is potentially the type of crowd who will easily become bored a few more years down the line, which will lead to financial ruin, and a hard core of real cricket fans having to watch them scramble around trying to get test cricket up and running again
 
Test cricket will always be number 1 in this country, history of the game and the ashes etc will make sure of that.

But in other countries not so sure. Pretty obvious in Asia that 1 day and 20/20 is top of the billing, just have to look at how many 1 day games get played over test cricket there.

The ICC have dropped the ball with not going ahead with the test championship, would have been fantastic in my opinion, and potentially would have bought in sponsors etc and made it more desirable again.

Unfortunately it all comes down to the cash at the end of the day..
 
Any cricketer with power can hit the ball and score quickly but they only last what? 4 over or so and become big stars but they wouldn't last in the test arena however even the slow scoring test batsmen could score at a run a ball at T20.

Test Cricket is still the ultimate test of a cricketer, there's nothing better than someone building an innings over a period of time.

But nobody can deny our county cricket clubs were dying,with nobody watching championship games.

20/20 is extremely entertaining to watch and whether people like it or not the majority of people find it good to watch.

People have and always will prefer to watch a Botham over a Boycott

Every other country let's there players play in the IPL,what gives us the right to think we are special.

Probably the stuck up bastards who run the MCC.

20/20 cricket is here to stay,countries and the ICC just need to work together to make Test Cricket and this work together.

That's not the whole story though. No other country has the start of their Domestic and International season overlapped by it.

What's more, if you start our season AFTER the IPL you miss two months when cricket could've been played.......

Exactly, it's another example of the English players suffering from being the only nation this far North. It's why we play so much more cricket than other nations and why our players can't play in the IPL unless their counties agree to it. Biggest problem with T20 cricket in England for me is that the England players don't play enough of it because it coincides with test series. I think the ECB need to find a block of a month or so in the 6 weeks holidays and let the England players play in it. That'll knacker the test series scheduling though.

I'd agree with that you could always play the T20 bollocks in June - playing Tests in July and August (or May for the early summer Tests against the minnows).
 
I just think if you really want the public in you'd be better off playing it during the kid's 6 weeks holiday and when the weather will be at it's best. Problem is that that's when I want to see test cricket too.
 
need to find a way to get test playing england players into the county games more often, even if it means rotating the test side more - everyone complains of burn out, seems perfectly sensible as the ecb are never going to cut back the amount of cricket played
 
Its easier to be a viewer for 20/20, so it has in a way become the main form world wide. I mean after work i can watch a fame of 20/20 but you cant do that with an odi or a test match. I love all forms of the games, test is the pinnacle though, but some games can be like watching paint dry though. 20/20 something is always happening, which is why it has gotten quite popular. I also think people most people seem to like a good aggressive batting masterclass with lots of sixes rather than a bowler bowling exceptionally well.

That said you cant take anything away from an ashes series and i loved watching that at durham
 
Test cricket is for the purists.

Unfortunatley T20 had changed the face of cricket forever, players will retire early and young players will gear their game in order to pursue the ££££ that the IPL and other franchises offer.
 
Something has to be done about test cricket to make it a more saleable asset. Yes, it will always have disadvantages over T20 due to the timeframes involved and the explosive nature of the game.

I can't believe however, that the ICC are taking so long to explore other avenues in the test game. How long are we going to trial this floodlit first class stuff with the pink ball before we take the plunge and play day/night tests? Why do we still not have a test championship? Loads of possibilities and as much as the purists will be against change, it must happen to prevent it dying out altogether
 
Day/night county cricket in England would have such a narrow window when it's warm enough and dark enough to make it worthwhile. And I'm not sure the extra gate receipts would make up for powering the lights. Probably end up losing money. Also I think Durham's game is showing that a day/night first class game is not fair when you go from daylight playing conditions to the night playing conditions.

My point is more about jazzing up the test game to stop it from dying out. Tests in England are not really an issue as they are more supported than anywhere else in the world. In the subcontinent however, and probably South Africa, Australia and the Carribean, day night tests are more than viable. It may just keep these countries interested enough to save test cricket from dying altogether.

You couldn't play Day/Night Tests here realistically because as we all know, in the middle of summer it's light until 9-10pm most nights!

As for other countries - is it actually a workday issue? Or would being off work not matter. That would be for me the only thing to effect crowds during day/night Tests.

As far as the T20 in the School Holidays go - if all games start at 6pm, surely it matters not whether it's a school night or not?? Therefore the school holidays should probably remain part of the Test/4-day calendar.
