Harry Maguire (possible transfer rumour?)

Laporte, but not a chance in hell we would get someone of his calibre in when he will be getting mega wages in Saudi

Sounds like he is looking for an out, linked with his old club in Spain over past couple of weeks. Was interesting in the Tom White pod that players need to stay in Saudi for 3 years for tax reasons if they want to keep it. He's been there since 2023.

But aye, if he is wanting away and willing to take a drop in money to play in a top league / have a big challenge again before he finishes, would pulling it right back again.

He's a much better player than most fans and the mainstream media would have ypu believe. But wages wise its never going to happen.

I don't buy into this obessesion that's developing with pace at the back. Ballard can run over distance and Maguire has enough about him to not get continually exposed in run of the mill games as part of an organised system. Play high (which we absolutely can't and won't do regularly) and ask him to run and chase in one on one defending regularly and it would be an issue. Under Le Bris I expect us to more compact, organised and deep, though some pace would help.
If you're playing a narrow, low block (which is what we've done a fair bit), pace is less important in defenders than discipline, organisation and concentration. When you're playing a high press with a high defensive line, having pace at the back is much more important. I don't think We're going to be doing that a lot, this season.

TLDR I agree.

We really need some height in the back line I would say. Against Real Betis they hardly layed a finger on us with their intricate passing and then a random cross into the box costs us. We've only got Ballard at the moment who could compete with any physical threats on a set piece and that's not enough.

Weird, I’m sure I read that he was part of their new leadership group, I thought they’d be keeping him due to that.

I was thinking the other day, if we were to look to make another Steve Bould type signing, who would there be? Maguire was one of the names I thought of but I'm not sure.

good cb but his technical passing made me nervous every time he played for England. I wasnt comfortable watching him when he got the ball.

Wonder if Man Utd would consider a loan with obligation to buy if we stay up? We can pick up a big chunk of his wages, he gets guaranteed regular football in a world cup season. Could work for all parties.

That said, if that sort of deal was on the table he'd have better options that us mind

Pretty sure he’s out of contract next summer.

In fact he’s definitely out of contract next summer

Not alongside Ballard, for me anyway; we'd be alarmingly slow on the half turn. Would have to be instead of and tbh I think I'd rather have Ballard, especially considering wages. He's our big bugger, now we need a fast bugger, in the words of Florent Ghisolfi.

All the links to centre backs to date suggest the club are targeting mobile, experienced players.

Maguire ticks one of those boxes but his lack of pace combined with astronomical wages suggest he’d not be on our list.

He’d immediately be our best defender but I just don’t see the club entertaining a bid, nor do I think Maguire would consider coming here.

The story I got was that MU don't really want to let him go and are offering a new contract because clubs are sniffing around.

Just wondered if we would have been one of them.

The type of signing that could be the difference between staying up or not.

Maguire running the defence.
Xhaka running the midfield.

These experienced leaders can be the difference.

Wages are mental though, so can’t see it.
