Compete in the latter stages of the champions league every season at one of the biggest teams in the world or beat some made up ‘record’ that would be broken in future anyway. Hard choice.

This drives me mad. It's another "football started in 1992" record. Jimmy Greaves holds the record but you wouldn't know that because Premier League records seem to be the only ones that matter. There's a generation growing up thinking Shearer has the most league goals of all time.

Aye Greavsie had the most as it's a younger generation thing though many more can compare this to players of this era as I doubt Greavsie will ever be beaten given how football has changed.

Even Shearer has 23 non PL goals to add to his PL tally. I've hoyed plenty up about the Greavsie thing as footy back then is a different era. For starters a lot more goals were scored and defenders and keepers back then weren't a mixture of the best players in the world so you'd think the standard overall wouldn't be as high as it is now.

In the past I've compared the likes of Greavsie/Shearer/Kane and Haaland for goals per minute on the pitch. Also along with what percentage of total league goals that season the player scored as the old Division one had more games per season and 100s more goals scored with a far higher goals per game, something like 25% more. I even looked at how many division goals were scored by all other players between each goal in the division and Greavsie wasn't top. Haaland is summit stupid like every 33rd goal

This is sorted by goals per game and it's mad how far ahead Dixie Dean was and his 60 goals in a season is never going to be beaten. I'd love to have seen him and Greavsie and Cloughie and a few others back in the day 😎

I hate to say it but Shearer's record is very good when you look at. Greaves and Shredded Wheat head are the only 2 post war players in the top 10

Goals to games is a good way to work it out. Plus it's hard to compare players from different eras.

Hope so because since Lineker, we've always had a world class striker ready to take over when the current one is finished. Kane seems to be the last in line.

Don't know if you clicked the waffle spoiler in the link to the other thread but it had some more comparisons. I was surprised at the goals per game for all games during Greavsie's time as it started at 3.72GPG whereas since the 90s it's been more steady. Not only more goals per game but more games with 42 a season.

Take 1957/58 at the start of Greavsie, it was 3.72GPG over a 42 game season. That means there were 156 goals in a teams season. So every team in the table would have 78 For and 78 Against as there was a total 1721 goals scored in 1957/58. Whereas a more recent 2.75GPG over a 38 game season is just 104 goals or 52 For and 52 against per team or 1045 goals. A huge difference some probably don't realise as I didn't until working it out just now 😵‍💫

In the image below showing the average GPG (click, rotate phone and zoom), Greavsie's era is the black section while he was at Chelsea and Spurs, the grey is his last 2 seasons at West Ham. I think the introduction of subs in 1965/66 had summit to do with the GPG dropping after Stanley Matthews retirement. Teams could replace injured players rather than having to play on with 10 men if one went off injured which obviously helped with more goals per game.
