Happy enough, a 'name' player. Does he have any experience in England?

(although this time of year the pitches ought to be at their best)

**Edit of course he has experience, it even says so in the text. Seems like an excellent plan b.

He's always looked absolutely gash at test level imo.

Not as good as Bancroft, but then that's stating the obvious really as otherwise he'd have been picked.

Shows intent from Durham though.

Bancroft averages 30.92 at test level, 3x50's, no 100's
Handscomb averages 38.92, 4x50's, 2x100's

I can't recall watching Handscomb play for Australia but statistically he is the better player.

Isn't he their Ballance? Started well then everyone realised he stands so far back he's practically behind the stumps so anything pitched up that swings/seams in has him lbw or bowled?

Well, that's fair enough but he's been chronic against England. Somehow managed to look bad when they were thrashing us down under, which was quite the achievement. I wouldn't fancy him much against sideways movement - suspect Bancroft having a better eye for that is why they've picked him.

Good comparison.

And if anyone told us we were getting Gary Ballance on loan we would be pretty happy. Good signing for Durham

Indeed. For all his faults at International level (which would have been addressed by a better batting coach IMHO), Ballance is an amazing batsman at County level. Yorkshire's top scorer, 900 runs, 5 centuries, 2 fifties this season.

Handscomb is also good against spin which will make him very useful in the Blast.

Bancroft was just as bad in that series and played every game.

He won't be playing England, he'll be playing Leicestershire, Northamptonshire et al.
Also had pretty good seasons at Gloucestershire (2015) and Yorkshire (2017). Some people will piss on any parade, looking forward to seeing him on Friday.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying he's a bad signing for Durham by any stretch, just trying to reason why Bancroft is getting a call up ahead of him

Cos Bancroft made the astute decision to join us and learn to score runs in English conditions. He was dreadful in his first few games and kept nicking off trying to leather the ball. It was only really in the RLC that he found his feet.
