Greek Island Holiday Help

We flew into Thessaloniki when we stayed in Pefkochori, Halkidiki.

The hotel was fabulous - Anna Island - brand new with a fantastic pool area and lots of swim-up rooms, room with jacuzzis on the balconies etc. The resort, however, was a bit of a let-down. Very tired looking in places and full of Eastern European families who flooded the bars at night but never seemed to eat in any of the restaurants. Loads of cars parked up with number-plates from all parts of the former Soviet Union.

If they could lift the hotel in it's entirety and move it to a better resort we would return in a heartbeat.

We found out from friends who had stayed there the week before us that they got a taxi into the next resort along - Hanioti - wish we had known that beforehand.

Stayed in Lassi as part of a two-resort holiday - the other being Skala.

Actually preferred Skala as everything in Lassi seems to be either side of a fairly busy road. Our opinion could have been coloured by the fact that it absolutely p!ssed down for three days - so much so that it was difficult to see more than twenty yards in front of you. The bars and restaurant on the ocean side of the road were completely flooded out and we had to stay in the hotel bar and order takeaways as it didn't have a restaurant - it was also bloody freezing for those three days.

It was, however, a nice easy walk into the capital, Argostoli, either via the longer coastal route - about an hour and a half - or over the hill - about twenty minutes. Well worth it for a mooch around and to see the sea-turtles that come into the harbour to feed on the scraps from the fishing boats. You can also get the ferry across to Lixouri which is another nice place to wander around, although we did see a middle-aged, barcode-wearing, full-kit-w@nker - he even had the socks on and those trainers that look like footie boots. Had a bit of a chortle when we saw him.

Cheers, we'll probably do Argostoli, generally aren't interested in travelling about too much but Lassi doesn't look too big so may have a day out. Probably bus or taxi, hills and heat aren't my favourite combo since the heart attack!

Cheers for the info, did you stay in the city centre in Thessaloniki?

Me Dad's been to both cities and loved both, although he said the food scene is better in Thessaloniki.
I got it wrong, we flew to thessaloniki but stayed in the resort area of Halkadiki, which is only a short drive away. see above posts re correction. take note of the post of Jap as well, he raises the same issues. Now whether these issues are the same in the town of Thessaloniki I do not know.

We went to Greece for the first time last year, largely based off recommendations from the lads and lasses on here, and bloody loved it. The food was almost without exception, fantastic. The only place we found that was not quite as good as the other tavernas etc we tried, was the one that was most highly rated in the YouTube influencer type videos we watched prior to travelling. Under The Pine Tree, that was it, in Skiathos. It was still good, but I think they were starting to believe their own hype to a degree!

We ate loads of grilled / fried fish, and lamb, and I really got stuck into the Stifado out there, a beef stew type thing which you'd think would be a bit heavy for a hot Summer night, but it was lush.
Love the " meat in the oven " type stuff . In the quieter rural places they sometimes just have that on cooking slowly all day . Potatoes or proper chips and bread .

Booked up recently to go to Pathos in a few weeks. More touristy than I'd have liked but the hotel has great pools and slides for the kids. There's a lovely beach 5 minutes away as well so I'll be taking my snorkel set

lamb kleftico, I just adore it. love going to different tavernas just to try their version

Our holiday this year has been postponed till late September so toward the end of the Greek hols season I think. Anyone travelled at a similar time got any recommendations? Last year we went to Skiathos and with some help / advice from @T_Bone we had a magnificent time in Muses Hotel in Koukounnaries. I fancy Rhodes this time or Kefalonia but open to suggestions from the mighty SMB.
I’m going to Rhodes for first 3 weeks in October. Go every year around that time and weather is fine. Was a bit ropey last year mind. We used to go mid September but started going a bit later. It’s a bit cooler on the nights but still ok. It’s a good time of year and no bellends knocking about like in height of summer.

Argostoli is lovely with loads of restaurants, bars, shops and a fantastic marina area with the walking bridge. Not sure I'd book a holiday to stay in Argostoli though. We tend to stay in Lassi at the Royal apartments and eat and drink there along with popping into Argostoli either by walking (20mins) or taxi which is about nine euros.
