Greatest promoted team

They mention Wolves finishing 7th first year after promotion, but iirc Wolves were promoted as champions.

Are we the highest place finish by a playoffs winner?

Just found out highest place finish of a playoffs winner was Ipswich (4th) 2000-2001 campaign

And highest place finish irregardless of how promoted, Mags finishing 3rd.

Depends if you think football began with the premier league.

If not, then Nottingham Forest, Ipswich, Derby and Leeds all did a lot better back in the day

It’s amazing how recency bias clouds people’s memories like. Nonetheless it’s a cracker and certainly up there… but the greatest? Not a chance
To counter your point I'd argue that the Premier league is the strongest its been for years in comparison to European leagues. The fact that English teams have reached major finals of all European trophies proves this. Just cause the title rave hasn't been great, the standard of the league is the highest standard by a margin

What were the odds pre season on European qualifying

Did forest and leeds not win league straight after promotion
Or am I meringue

Going forward, with the distortion caused by PL money vs Championship, this may not be topped by another playoff winning promoted team.

Would be stunned if Hull is anywhere near 7th next year.

There’s no doubt we’re the best promoted team ever. The gap between the top two divisions is many, many times wider than when Forest or Mags or Ipswich finished higher. Not even a debate.

True Dawn, not False Dawn.

One for the ages.

^THIS

Basically you’re asking a team to compete and place higher than teams with 10X resources, just not going to happen very often if ever again.

What you have to factor in is that it’s only 4 years since we won the league one play off final. We couldn’t even finish in the top 2 of league one.

From that joyful day at Wembley in May 2022 to today. Quite a progression.

And I haven’t forgotten the heroes at every step:

McGeady, LND, Pritchard, Embleton, …
Roberts, Clarke, Neil, …
And of course the current crop.

Special kudos to Luke & Trai for the first goal today, symbol of continuity from our League One years.

No. Forest getting promoted one year, winning the league the next year then winning the European cup the year after that is an achievement that will never be equaled, whatever the caveats about how different the game is now. Just shows what a genius Clough was.
