Grant Ward Blackpool player abused on Instagram

I feel like you've argued against your own point there. He was picked specifically because of the colour of his skin. Therefore its not random at all.

It's random in so much as Grant Ward was picked instead of Rashford or Pogba. There's no reason or logic behind who gets the abuse and who doesn't.

Something needs to change mind. ID to register is the obvious idea, if it was up to me I'd do away with all the big platforms and go back to forums only. If you had to link id to stay on here I wonder how many would still do it, would stop the endless stream of alt troll accounts if nowt else.
I would be all for it, my account is in my real name and my sky email account that matches my name, anyone willing to say yes or no to the ID requirement ?

Would this be a requirement of everyone currently on the platform? Millions and millions of people uploading ID (not just presenting ID as you would in a shop for alcohol) for big social media companies to store. Who'd be responsible for looking after these details?

You haven't had to upload ID to use this site. You've signed up with a real name and an email address with the same name. That's not really proof. Would Roger be happy asking for passport details of everyone currently on here? Doubt it.

Theres no way on this Earth Facebook are going to accept millions and millions of people throwing ID at them to get onto their platform when they need all these people to stay on the platform for various reasons.

There’s nothing at all to suggest it was a Sunderland fan. Seems like a bot account. Another reason why it should be law to produce identification to open a social media account.

I'd happily do it. I wouldn't want to post under my real name tbh (not being funny but there are some odd balls on social media, I've been threatened more than once and I'd like to think I'm about as non confrontational as they come), but I'd happily have the site owner have my details, same with twitter and the likes.

Good points.

I still think these media companies could do a lot more to identify those blatantly breaking the law.

When you think about it, “Social Media” is a bit contradictory. Social, needing company, being inclusive but then posts are done by everyone behind the protection of anonymity.

I accept that contacts and relationships do build but you never see someone posting abuse then declaring to all and sundry who they are and their reasons for doing so.

A minefield.

It's sad to think people are randomly targeting black athletes on social media. What the hell is going?
It isn’t just black athletes, contrary to what Sky will have you believe. If you go on Twitter or Instagram most Saturdays it isn’t hard to find all kinds of abuse directed at players of all creeds and colours, and even genders. The whole culture stinks - we all get wound up by players and things but can’t say I’ve ever wanted to go onto the Internet in anonymous mode and abuse people over it.

Problem is that it’s so easy to do it totally anonymously. I’m young and reasonable at computers but nothing special, and I would know how to go about doing it and be totally undetectable, which means hundreds of thousands of others will too. Not really sure how you go about policing it tbh or doing anything about it at all really

It will be one of ours, I think we all kinda know that.

We need to stamp this out or it will tarnish us all, we already had the arsehole doing monkey gestures and the racial abuse of Bents Mam.

It’s not just black athletes who get abuse but it is black athletes who get racist abuse.

Sorry i don't believe this i think it will turn out to be someone to pretending to be a lads fan, and chance to be from Numcastle

f***ing grow up man there’s been at least two high profile occasions involving SAFC fans, some people’s blindness is just as ignorant as the issue.
